(7/7) 👀 When I saw this insect eyeing me, immediately I thought of a Gary Larson cartoon. 😅 It just seemed like I had caught this little one in the act of some abnormal, mischievous behavior.😲

🌄 I saw this moth when trekking in the Appalachians and had no idea what it was. After a bit of research, it turns out this is the ailanthus webworm moth (Atteva aurea). 🦋

This species is not native to areas as far north as Virginia. It has been able to thrive off an invasive plant, the tree of heaven, introduced from China.

Unbeknown to me, on that same day I had also taken photos of the larval, or caterpillar-form, of this species.🐛 Turns out this species has a very fast life cycle, so seeing the various lifecycle stages on the same day is not uncommon.

A week of Virginia animals comes to an end. I was going to post a nice photo of some deer in meadow but I suppose that will be for another day.

And of course there will be more Virginia nature in the future—I have to get back there at some point. Thanks for viewing and reading!

Cheers! - K

(6/7) 🦎 Virginia has so many wonderful creatures! This five-lined skink (Plestiodon sp.) was sunning on a tree by a trickling creek. 🌲

This is a juvenile—all species of Plestiodon have those vibrant blue tails that fade away into adulthood.

This lizard is carnivorous, mostly eating insects🐜 and other invertebrates🐛. I hope this one fattened up well for the winter.

One more photo to go for my Virginia remembrance week!

(5/7) 🌞 Yup, another warm day remembrance from Virginia.

I wish the focus was a bit better—but when I saw this red-bellied woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus) cruising around the canopy above me, I scrambled to get my camera out of the bag. 📷

I was able to capture a few shots before it bolted to another part of the woods. Though I soon lost sight of the woodpecker, I did hear it foraging, beating a bill against trees in the distance.🌳🌲

🤔 The name of this species is a bit deceptive as the underside of this woodpecker doesn’t have nearly as much red as the top/backside of the head.

I find this bird to be very eyesome. These are fairly common within the eastern United States, in fact I saw one in Chicagoland just the other day. It was a bully at a birdfeeder, causing the sparrows and juncos into a commotion.

(4/7) 🐝 I encountered this busy female eastern carpenter bee (Xylocopa virginica) foraging on a pleasant summer day in Virginia. 🌸 She was great practice for my newly acquired Nikon DSLR.

This species looks very similar to the common eastern bumble bee, also found within the eastern United States, but can be differentiated by examining the conspicuous shiny, metallic-like abdomen as seen in the photo above.

Gotta love our pollinators!

(3/7) 😋Throwback week continues: This nursery web spider (Pisaurina mira)🕷 was found on a nice warm day in N. Virginia back in August.

🙋🏻‍♀️💁🏻‍♀️ My nieces joined me for our Nature Day when we saw a bunch of these ambush predators perched atop the leaves of flowering plants. We found this spider in mid-meal!

This species is quite common in the Eastern United States. 🕸Nursery web spiders do not build a web to capture prey, however they do build a web for their younglings when an egg sac is soon to hatch.

This is not a potently venomous species and do not present a threat to you or your pets if found in your garden.

(2/7) 🌞 Another warmer-day remembrance of an animal in Virginia. Like my last post, I found this captivating larva of a hickory tussock moth (Lophocampa caryae) while hiking in the Appalachian Mountains.🌄

Beautiful—for sure. But beware! This is a venomous species! The aposematic colorations and patterning says, "Hey! Don't eat me or you'll suffer!"🐛

You wouldn’t want to touch those hairs as it could cause contact dermatitis—similar to if you touched poison ivy.

There hasn’t been much research done (at least that I could find) about the exact contents of the toxins and venoms this species potentially possesses. Nevertheless, if you do touch one—wash afterwards quickly and thoroughly.

Cheers!

(1/7) I’m currently in the cold of Chicagoland getting some work done. I’m missing my humans and animals in Virginia. Each day this week I’ll be posting a photo of mine of VA wildlife taken during warmer weather.

This is a red-footed cannibalfly (Promachus rufipes). I spotted this insect in the late summer within the Appalachian Mountains.

This type of robber fly is an agile predator of other insects and even spiders, capable of capturing prey in flight. Once captured, a victim is injected with neurotoxins and enzymes to be subdued and more easily digested.

Great blue heron (Ardea herodias herodias) – Watching these wading birds exercise patience while fishing is a true lesson for any fisher.

These birds are fairly skittish when humans approach but this specimen seemed to not mind the photo opportunity.

This was a rare treat for me to see this Asian horntail or woodwasp (Eriotremex formosanus) searching to deposit her eggs in this tree.

First off, this is an invasive species from Southeast Asia that was probably introduced during or just before the Vietnam War in the early 70's. Secondly, this species is hardly (if ever) recorded venturing so northerly as N. Virginia (the location of the photo.)

That intimidating looking 'stinger' is just a very long ovipositor for depositing eggs, so you don't need to worry about being stung.

Fun Fact: All stingers within Hymenoptera, or the bees, ants, wasps and sawflies, are just modified ovipositors. So if you do you get stung, it's a female doing the stinging.

Cheers! -K

This adorable crested gecko (Correlophus ciliatus) is one of many New Caledonian specimens that I was able to examine for my latest video ( https://youtu.be/4urKarBUyOQ ). Gecko keeper @villacorta_tr3s kindly showed me and taught me about these marvelous creatures.

The crested gecko is unlike many other geckos in that if it ever loses its semi-prehensile tail (as a defense mechanism), a new tail will not regenerate. This does not severely hinder the gecko's survival ability.

Endemic to a small southern portion of New Caledonia, a collective of islands east of Australia, the crested gecko was once thought extinct. The IUCN’s Red List currently lists this species as ‘vulnerable’ for wild populations, though it remains popular in the pet trade.

The New Caledonian geckos are capable of changing their colors, a process commonly referred to as ‘firing up and down’, where pigment-containing cells known as chromatophores are contracting and expanding.

Thanks again to Caesar, @villacorta_tr3s , for showing me his wonderful animals. Check out his Instagram. Cheers! -K

Fishing is more than about catching fish. Being amongst the outdoors and witnessing the purities of nature is such a pleasant reward.

Northern Wisconsin has gorgeous lakes and forests. I always enjoy these short respites as I'm able to relax and reenergize.

Getting outdoors is healthy both mentally and physically. There is sufficient research existing to promote this simple concept. I will be producing various videos in the near future to show how going outdoors has helped me stay balanced and could help others. Cheers! -K

Behold some gruesome, yet fascinating, parasitism.

This tobacco hornworm, or the larva of a Carolina sphinx moth (Manduca sexta), is hosting the larvae of a parasitoid wasp, (Cotesia congregata is my best guess.)

Those semi-white blobs appearing to pop out of the caterpillar are wasp larvae emerging from within, about two weeks after they had hatched and began feeding off of the innards of the host - all the while that host remained alive!

This parasitism involves ancient viruses coexisting within the genome of the wasp and venom that both suppress the immune system of the host.

A Patron of mine, dace_88, sent me some photos and a question about what was happening in his garden. I HAD TO MAKE A VIDEO! I was also able to stop by his garden yesterday during my travels and grab some photos of this.

Check out the vid on Koaw Nature's YouTube if you are more curious. I'll link it in my bio for a bit. Cheers! -K

Yesterday I was scouting out the woods around my house in Reston, Virginia. I found many cool creatures from deer to snakes to fishes, but this southern black widow was a spectacular find!

Sadly, she did have a fungal infection (or so I believe) that had already claimed three of her legs and was working on the fourth along that left lateral side.

She is probably not due long for this world but I should hope her remaining hours give her some comfort.

Shenandoah National Park offers beautiful trails atop the aged, worn down Appalachians ⛰ that formed some 480 mya. They make my familiar Rocky Mountains, that popped up some 80-55 mya, seem like youngsters.

There were many beautiful scenes, plants and creatures in dense forests but this 🐸 pickerel frog (Lithobates palustris) 🐸 was just asking for a photoshoot!

This species does exhibit sexual dimorphism where the females are usually darker and of greater size but it remains difficult to tell without intrusive examination. (I can't confidently say the sex for this specimen.)

Cheers!

What Poison Ivy Does to Your Skin (Basic Science) | Koaw Nature

I chopped this clip out of my main poison ivy experiment video. It shows the basic science (with a fun cartoon animation) behind poison ivy's toxic urushiol oil.

So yes, I may be very crazy for rubbing poison ivy all over my skin and spending hours upon hours creating these videos that only a handful of people watch...but it gives me purpose. There's satisfaction in knowing that even one or two individuals learned something from a Koaw Nature production. My videos on fish education are doing fairly well and I am always working to improve my productions to try and reach a larger audience.

Thanks for your time. -K

Eastern Hercules beetle - (Dynastes tityus).

I was so pleased to encounter this beetle beauty! This adorable female was wandering around on the pathway. I moved her away from the foot traffic as well as our curious kitty. (You know how cats can be.)

Hopefully she is feeling frisky and releasing pheromones. I'd love to see a male as they have very unique rhinoceros-like horns that are used in battle. Cheers!
