“Walking Among the Trees,” is an exhibit of botanical-themed monoprints and monotypes, asking us to pay more attention to the natural world. This is an installation shot of three two-layered monotypes, each consisting of a layer of gauze and a layer of canvas-like cotton. Images of leaves are printed and collaged on both layers.

Like nature itself, the gauze is very fragile. While working with it, I had to be careful not to stretch or tear it. The cotton is stronger and more solid. The leaf prints on the gauze are somewhat faded in comparison to the prints on the cotton. They evoke the life cycle of the plant as it begins to wither.

There is a space between the delicate gauze and the more resilient cotton, with an interplay between the two. The two layers merge visually, yet remain physically apart unless moved by the air.

The viewer looks through the gauze to see what’s behind, as through a symbolic lens. When we observe nature, our perception is shaped by our own lens. Knowledge, memory, emotions, the time spent observing, and our awareness of an existing environmental crisis all affect what we see.
Please feel free to share your thoughts or if you haven’t seen the exhibition , stop by HallSpace, 490 Dorchester Avenue, Dorchester 02125. Fridays and Saturdays 12-5 PM.
