📚Books that have kept me company this year 📚
If you’re a book lover and you don’t have a account yet, consider this your gentle nudge to fix that. Goodreads is completely free, incredibly easy to use, and—most importantly—a game-changer for keeping track of your reading life.

With a new year comes fresh resolutions, and setting a reading goal is one of my favorites. I usually aim for around twenty books a year (sometimes fifteen if life gets busy), which feels both achievable and satisfying. Watching that progress bar inch forward is surprisingly rewarding.

Here’s my 2025 reading list—full of stories that entertained, challenged, and stuck with me long after the final page.

Head over to our blog to learn more. See link in bio.👆🏽

🧑‍💻 WEBINAR 👩🏽‍💻The Ultimate Press Release: Get Your Book Noticed

Dara Colwell is a freelance journalist, content strategist, and editor with a passion for shaping ideas into compelling and authentic narratives. She has 20 years’ experience writing, editing, and providing strategic guidance for authors and organizations. Her work covers AI and leadership transformation, the arts, culture, and communications. Originally from Los Angeles, CA, she has lived in the Netherlands for 20 years and teaches professional writing at the University of Groningen. As a writer and journalist, she has been on both sides of the press release—writing them and rejecting them. She teaches clients how to frame their message to keep journalists reading. Dara’s ultimate professional goal is to write intelligent, engaging stories and get results—and teach others how to learn and finesse these skills, too.

Learn:

➡️Why press releases aren’t old-school (they’re still important): they get your book noticed by the media, helping you build your brand, and attract readers.
➡️Structure and format: the standard format (inverted pyramid), which includes the headline, date, location, body text, quotes, and contact information (plus visuals)
➡️To make it compelling, start with the hook: if you don’t grab a journalist’s attention, you might as well toss your press release in the bin. Also, consider a newsworthy angle.
➡️Content and style: keep it short and sweet including relevant links.
➡️How to pitch strategically: as with any writing, target your audience

There will be plenty of time for discussion and Q&A

✍️In the Works at Storyhouse Works

‘All Too Well’ by Ceylin Mutlu

It’s been a pleasure working with 19-year-old Havo student Ceylin Mutlu on her forthcoming YA fiction novel ‘All Too Well’. Editor Rebecca Blunden of did a manuscript assessment with Ceylin this past summer, after which Ceylin worked hard on revisions before sending her manuscript to beta readers. After working through beta reader feedback, Ceylin’s manuscript is now off to the copyediting round with editor .

At Storyhouse Works we believe it’s important to encourage young writers to get their stories out into the world. We look forward to Ceylin’s book release in Spring 2026!

ROOTS OF LEADERSHIP: the hidden stories that shape leaders of change
Compiled by Erica L. Kaufman, Psy.D.
Released in September 2026

Before you lead change, understand what changed you.

Behind our every decision, every vision, every moment of courage or doubt, lies a hidden story—an early wound, a formative lesson, a person who changed everything, a challenge that rewired how we see the world.

In this anthology, leaders across industries and backgrounds share the deeply personal experiences that shaped not just what they do, but who they are when they lead—experiences that pull back the curtain on leadership itself.

These aren’t polished success stories or step-by-step frameworks. They’re raw, human accounts of the moments that formed these leaders’ values and instincts and taught them how to navigate uncertainty. These stories also reveal the invisible roots of leadership that textbooks don’t mention: childhood patterns that still surface in boardrooms, unseen privileges that open doors closed to others, losses that shatter and rebuild, and quiet voices that give permission to lead differently.

This anthology is curated by executive coach Erica L. Kaufman, Psy.D., who has spent years working with leaders to uncover and understand their stories. The selected stories reflect a deep truth:
The leaders who create lasting impact are those who know where their leadership really comes from. Through her coaching work, Erica has witnessed how excavating these formative experiences unlocks not just self-awareness, but the authentic presence that builds trust, inspires followership, and drives meaningful change.

Because the most powerful leaders aren’t just skilled—they’re conscious of what made them.

My favorite part of an author’s book is often the acknowledgements, as that’s where they often share how the writing and publishing process was for them. I love Henri’s metaphor for writing your first novel - it’s like stepping foot outside your front door, not knowing when you’ll be back.

And he did it! Henri Wild’s The Heart Of The Party will be available as paperback and ebook this November, well on time for the holiday season. Thank you and Callum McLean for helping to bring this book to life. Stay tuned at storyhouse.com/henriwild

An exhilarating portrait of politics in the AI age, The Heart Of The Party captures the growing conflict at society’s core: in a world where machines and data drive the agenda, where do humans − and our idea of democracy − fit in?

Wild shines a light on the fallible world of Westminster, where good intentions collide with ambition, betrayal and the deadly threat of dark power… with unforgettable consequences.

For fans of classic thrillers such as House of Cards and The 39 Steps. The Heart Of The Party is Book One of the Sean Leigh trilogy.

I needed time and space to focus on a piece I’m writing about the experience of bringing my Dutch family to America for a half year on a self-imposed study abroad program. ‘Wild Awakenings’ Writing Workshop at the in Rhinebeck, NY was just what the doctor ordered.

I’ve always been a fan of Cheryl’s work. Seeing her in action, sharing her craft, and the way she drew out the best not only with writers attending in person, but also those who were at home on zoom, was testimony to the inspiring person she is.

Cheryl reminded us that writing is a great privilege. It helps us make sense of the world around us, understand ourselves, and connect with others (something we could all definitely use more of, especially now).

Highlights included;

*A wonderful hand-drawn visual of a clothesline showing how plot and dropdowns relate (as a visual learner, I really appreciated this one).

*Cheryl’s tips for battling writers’ block which included reading poetry, writing a letter to yourself, or writing a gratitude list. All of these allow you to enter into a sense of play and creativity.

I was humbled and amazed by the stories shared by brave writers. Thank you, Cheryl, for liberating writers around the world and to the Omega Institute for your professional ex*****on of this phenomenal weekend of learning and connection!

Check out our recommendations for upcoming writing retreats & workshops.

Finding the right retreat or writing workshop can be daunting. That’s why we decided to simplify things for you by sharing our favorites.

The most important part of self-publishing is getting words down on the page in the first place. Hopefully these workshops and retreats will help you do just that!
