On Sept. 13, the Student Media Operating Board voted to remove Editor-in-Chief Gregorio Olivares Gutierrez from his position after three alleged violations of Student Media bylaws.

These violations were presented to the board by current Student Media Adviser Lydia Lum. The Mercury’s management team believe that Olivares’s firing was done under petty stipulations, handled unprofessionally and above all else, signals The Mercury’s inevitable collapse.

On Sept. 13, UTD’s Student Media Operating Board voted to remove Gregorio Olivares Gutierrez from his position as Editor-in-Chief of The Mercury, effective immediately. The Mercury's official student members demand his immediate reinstatement as Editor-in-Chief.

Unless the demands outlined in the full strike statement are met, the Sept. 16 special issue will be The Mercury’s final publication. Should The Mercury cease publication, our mission to serve news to the UTD community will continue under a new online publication independent of administrative oversight. This new publication will be for students, by students and overseen by a supervisory board of student organizations.

For further details about the Sept. 13 meeting and allegations against Olivares, read our news and editorial articles in The Mercury’s Sept. 16 special issue. To show your support for The Mercury’s demands, become a signatory of this strike statement by visiting tinyurl.com/mercurystrike.

Richard Benson announced his departure from his position as UTD’s fifth president Aug. 26, saying in his resignation letter that, “Reflecting on all that has been accomplished over the last eight years, and all that has been set in motion, I feel that this is a good time to pass the leadership of UT Dallas to a new president.” As he steps down, we, too, reflect on his actions and the kind of president he was. Benson will leave a swath of angry, hurt and disappointed students and faculty behind. Under Benson’s recent leadership, major incidents such as the Spirit Rocks’ removal as well as the violent raid of the Gaza Liberation Plaza have left a permanent stain both on Benson’s legacy and that of UTD as a whole.

President Richard Benson sent out an email Monday at 1 p.m. announcing that the UT System has accepted his resignation and is beginning to look for a new president. Benson, who became UTD's fifth president in 2016, said he expects the search to take "the better part of the 2025 academic year." He will remain president until a successor is chosen and ready to begin their term, and will remain a faculty member at UTD after stepping down.

This is a developing story.

PSA: On Aug. 14, all restaurants in the Student Union except the UTD Market will be closed because of a lack of running water. Student Union Director Dan Goodwin said that over the weekend, the SU water main suffered a break. Water within the SU will be shut off from 6 a.m. to noon Aug. 14 so repairs can be made, during which bathrooms, sinks and other water-based resources in the SU will be unavailable. The Student Services Building and Student Services Addition are unaffected and the closest alternatives for students at the SU seeking a restroom.
