Rim to River 100 has been completed! I (Jason) ventured out-of-state to the New River Gorge for what was a beautiful, but challenging course featuring over 12k feet of elevation. This is race #3 in my 4 consecutive week calendar of stupidity, with Canal Corridor 100 and Columbus Marathon being the first 2, and GRRR 50K this coming Saturday.
As a first, the course was changed *mid-race*. A road was being worked on due to erosion of a supporting bank that took it to one lane. We had all ran on it already, and the leaders had just passed it again when more of the bank collapsed and the road was completely shut down. Kudos to the race director for coming up with an alternative solution instead of canceling the rest of the race! Only downside is that the course was now 5 miles short.
Highlights include:
- There were several absolutely brutal climbs, and rocks everywhere
- Brought poles again. They definitely saved my quads and l was able to do some semblance of running on the more technical sections
- Biffed it when I looked down quickly to see my chest lamp’s charge. Bent my fingers on my right hand back while trying to catch myself without breaking my poles
- I missed a turn and added 3.5 miles
- This tested my mental capacity for hills and rocks
Finish time via chip was somewhere around 26:30, but I kept running running to finish up the full 100 in 26:58. Guess those bonus 3.5 miles came in handy!
