Tumbleweird exists to bring together a more diverse, creative, and progressive community than Eastern Washington gets credit for, in order to connect, highlight, and encourage the betterment of our area. We do this by publishing a community-driven paper that uncovers the region’s true identity in a way that’s always positive, often irreverent, and never timid. We serve the truly powerful: the underdogs, the misfits, the outsiders, the newcomers, those on the margins, and the ones who defy the status quo. Except for the almighty buttermint lobby.

Hay raíces que no se pueden arrancar. There are roots that cannot be pulled out.

Desde enero de 2026, Alcon Media, junto con el Centro De La Dignidad y Producciones Klaindastino Kors, ha producido más de 300 audios que cuentan la historia de los mexicas, mayas, olmecas, quechuas, purépechas, incas, mapuches y muchas otras naciones. Se transmiten en La Ranchera 104.5fm106.9, Radio Lobo 99.5 FM y La Gran X 104.9 y 94.1 FM, de Moses Lake a Pendleton y de Yakima a Walla Walla.

Since January, Alcon Media, with the Center of Dignity and Klaindastino Kors, has produced more than 300 audio segments on the Indigenous nations of the Americas, voiced by Mexican and Colombian artists. The goal, in Ulises Navarro's words: for young people born and raised here to feel "the greatness of their ancestors' scientific discoveries, political developments, and customs."

Friendly reminder of Data theft sites:
VoteSafe.org is run by America PAC, a super PAC backed by Elon Musk. It collects extensive personal data (full name, DOB, address, email, phone, IP, location, and your browsing activity) and its privacy policy allows that data to be sold or shared with third parties.

Multiple state election officials — including Washington's Secretary of State — have publicly warned voters to stay off the site.

What to do instead:
- Go to vote.gov (run by the federal Election Assistance Commission). It's free, doesn't collect personal info, and just links you to your state's official election portal.
- Share this with friends, family, and community groups.

Richland's ten Flock cameras came down in June. They've been replaced with Axon cameras, and most of the public never heard about it.

The Axon contract passed the City of Richland Government council on October 7, 2025, as part of the consent agenda, the part of a meeting where routine items are often grouped together and passed without comment. The contract includes body cams, drones, storage, and license-plate-reader (ALPR) cameras that mount on existing light poles.

Nearly a year later, at the August 18 council meeting, Councilmember Kurt Maier asked how the data would be protected better than it was with Flock. Chief Martin Pilcher presented plans and guardrails the following week, including a map of camera locations.

On September 21, Richland WA Police Department told Tumbleweird it is not currently using ALPR through the new system, has not established regional sharing agreements, and that any future use would have to comply with Washington law.

Why we keep asking: In 2025, our reporting found U.S. Border Patrol had accessed Flock systems here, and Richland's council learned about it only after reading our story. A new state law, the Driver's Privacy Act, now limits plate-reader data to 21 days and bans its use near schools, immigration centers, food banks, and health care facilities.

New at Gallery at the Park today: "Women Who Are Immigrants and Refugees," portraits of first-generation immigrant women by Yidan Guo.

Guo immigrated to the United States in 2013. She's an artist and educator based in Pocatello whose work has been in more than 30 juried exhibitions worldwide, and she paints from experience: "Adapting to a new culture is rarely seamless or effortless. The emotional impact of relocation and acculturation continues to shape both my personality and my art, resonating with the shared experiences of other immigrant and refugee women."

Alongside her portraits: 3D work by Columbia Fine Wood Artists, a group of local wood artists recognized nationally and internationally.

City of Pasco's councilmember social media policy still mentions MySpace. It says nothing about AI.

In an opinion piece, Bryan Verhei, an self-described 'elder millennial' who remembers dial-up, read Resolution No. 3821 and found a policy that is mostly suggestion. Doing City business on a private account is strongly discouraged, not disallowed, and nothing defines when a post on a personal page becomes official communication.

His proposals for the City Council:

1. Restrict use of the councilmember title on pages the City doesn't control

2. Enforceable rules with an independent enforcement process

3. Define official versus personal business, and what can't be shared unverified

4. Ban generative AI in communication with constituents

5. Visible corrections, not an acknowledgment buried in the comments

His line is clear: everyone keeps their First Amendment rights and their opinions. City business gets a higher standard.
