“Justice for José. On August 19th at 6 am, José was born—healthy and perfect, after a normal birth. It was an enormous joy. We went up to the room, and hours later they took him to a heated crib because his temperature was 36.2°C, and the ideal is 36.5°C. My mother went with him, and I went to rest.
I woke up to the sound of my baby crying and a smell of something burning. When I got to the room, there were already several people there and a commotion. They took me downstairs to where the NICU is, and my mother told me what had happened.
– A nurse had taken a piece of cotton, heated it on a metal plate that acts like an ember, put it inside José’s sock, and then put his onesie back on. He immediately started crying a lot. They claimed it would soothe him, and they even put their finger (with a glove) in his mouth to calm him down since he’s very sweet, but the burning continued, and the smell grew stronger. My mother noticed that his onesie had changed color and removed it. When she took off José’s sock, his foot was already burned—the sock and the onesie too.
