Thank You, River City Givers!

We are happy to announce that we have chosen WRIR 97.3FM Richmond Community Radio for our 4th quarter donation.

WRIR is a local independent radio station that has been a part of the Richmond community for 20 years. They are a truly local independent radio station with 30 different talk programs and 80 music shows. Their shows feature folks in our community and talks about events and other things happening in the area. They share different resources for different populations.

They are currently moving to a new building near 17th Street Farmers Market to be more ADA accessible as they have individuals with all different abilities who volunteer. This would also put them closer to many community events.

WRIR does a lot of educational programs in the community and has programs and podcasts to teach students.

Hello friends of WRIR 97.3FM Richmond Community Radio! As you’ve probably heard, we’re in the midst of inventory/packing/moving things to our permanent home. Because that was hot on the tails of the Fall Fund Drive, Certified Crucial is handling printing/packing/shipping premiums for us this time around.

We’ve needed additional time as we’ve worked out these additional processes, and we appreciate your patience! Donation thank-you-gifts will be on their way as soon as possible.

Before I started volunteering at WRIR, my knowledge of world music was pretty much limited to the Putumayo compilation CDs I'd get at my job. I knew there was more out there, but I didn't know how to find it.

Luckily, WRIR had Bill Lupoletti, and he knew how to find more. As our World Music Director & host of Global A Go-Go, he saw a lot of music pass through our station. And he knew enough about his fellow DJs to recommend things he thought would fit into their shows: "This is the best bad music I've heard in quite a while!" "If you found this at the thrift store you'd be thrilled, but it's brand new." "...early Mexican garage rock band who was apparently quite a phenomenon south of the border. Who knew? Certainly not me. Anyway, they're retro-cool-primitive."

So this week, in honor of Bill, I'm playing some of the music that he shared with me, and some music I think he'd enjoy if he was still with us: Takaat, Balkan Taksim, Cumbia Machuca, La Perla, Luna O'Cero, Antoine Villoutreix & Super Antena Tropical, and much more. Thanks for encouraging me to decolonize my ears, Bill. I'll do my best to keep it up.
