Happy everyone!
Education on sharks and their place in the ocean's ecosystem is incredibly important. Should all do our part to try and protect it (Remember, "Fish are friends.")
Now, Jaws may be partially to blame for the fear that surrounds sharks, but I would feel remiss if I didn't take a moment to share my deep affection for this undeniable classic and revolutionary film. Which is my absolute favorite film.
It changed things by introducing us to the "Summer Blockbuster." It set a precedent for what a film could aspire to: beautiful art, firmly biting into the zeitgeist, remaining a part of our cultural dialect, and being an all around good time to watch. Not to mention scaring many off from setting foot in the ocean.
My love for Jaws started when my younger brother ( ) and I would watch it multiple times a day. I can't say what it was that engaged me at the time--the shark attacks, the amazing performances of the actors, the fighting a power beyond one's comprehension...well, at the time, I certainly couldn't understand the artistic beauty of this film. As an adult, I have come to learn that maybe Spielberg and his team didn't fully understand the film while they were making it either. But perhaps that's what makes it that so special. It transcended expectations into this spectacular collaboration of talents to enthrall, entertain, and terrify. It's marvelous to consider how such a massive film could be created with so many different pieces working in tandem to, literally, keep the ship afloat.
All of it inspires my art: the camera moves/angles, the framing, the score, the story, the amazing characters and the unbelievable actors who gave them to life...all of it still holds up today, 45 years later, and I'm still studying all of it. Maybe it's a cliche film to hang your hat on, but I can honestly say I wouldn't be the filmmaker and storyteller I am today without his film. It helped mold my love of the medium and teaches me so much about the artform.
Does anyone else have a memory involving Jaws? Or another film that had an immense impact on you and your childhood?
