Grenada is embracing a progressive future with upcoming Grenada Cannabis Reform, as discussed by Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell in response to Kimron George's question!
"The intent is to decriminalize cannabis use in small quantities," PM Mitchell stated, adding, "we certainly don't want our police officers spending their time chasing someone for a ma*****na spliff." This means a shift towards personal use decriminalization and allowing home cultivation of a few plants.
Grenada also aims to establish a thriving medical, industrial, and commercial cannabis industry, with special acknowledgement for religious and sacramental use, "certainly starting with the Rastafarian community." Plus, an amnesty or expungement of records is on the table for past cannabis convictions.
Key takeaways:
πΏ Decriminalization for small personal use.
π± Establishment of medical, industrial, & commercial cannabis industries.
βοΈ Amnesty/expungement for past convictions β "up to whatever is the amount that we agree upon."
The legislative process is moving quickly! The cabinet had intense discussions this past Monday and legislation is expected in Parliament by July! As the PM noted, "This is not a straightforward and simple matter because Grenada...is a signatory to certain treaty conventions."
Responsible use is key β no public smoking & 21+ age limit.
A new era for Grenada!
