Yesterday marked the 44th anniversary of one of the most under-rated albums of the 2 Tone era, the stunning “Hot” debut by Birmingham outfit The Equators. Formed by brothers Donald, Leo & Rocky Bailey in 1977, The Equators were discovered by Stiff Records’ head honcho Dave Robinson when they were playing a support slot with The Beat. And the band’s debut LP for Stiff Records (released on 17th July 1981) certainly didn’t disappoint! “Hot” lived up to its name with 11 scorching tracks that put a huge smile on your face & a huge spring in your skank. The Equators fused the powerful 2 Tone energy of The Selecter & The Specials with a more soulful groove & Ranking Roger style toasting for a sound that was not to be missed!
