Everytime I play the melody to this tune, I think about the video of Wayne saying that “he was going to the moon to find some new notes. When I first saw that, I immediately thought that he had a different relationship with notes in general. Of course his music would strongly suggest that without thinking about it but in my view, it felt like his “special relationship” with music was the very reason why he knew how to write the music that he did.

In my own playing, I am always looking for ways to develop that special relationship. I can build my own connections in any of the music that I am playing if I am not afraid to go new places in search of new ideas. That idea makes me a lifelong fan of Wayne and his work.

Playing in this city was insanity!!! I have only seen Istanbul from pictures in the history books I studied in school but to have finally played there had my curiosity burning all over again!

From my position on stage, this show had a few hurdles to overcome. This was the furthest east we were slated to travel on this whole tour, we had different instruments from the ones we were playing on the rest of the tour and it took me until about halfway through the set before I felt like I had the energy to be in the front. No matter how great a tour goes, there is always one day that will negatively stick out to me. Those are the days where I find out if I am really built for this or not.

As usual, the quirkiness of the set was felt around the team but once I listen back to it, this show quickly became one of my favorites set recordings to listen to just like Zach said it would be lolol.

Different ball game here.

With the original harmonic and rhythmic structure, the emphasis when playing the melody, in my opinion, should be on making the melody as seamless and phrase-oriented as possible. Traditional bottom-up roles being played for the most part.

With this new landscape (Shoutout to .muldrow 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾), the emphasis ABSOLUTELY has to be on the quarter note that is establishing and thinking of as mainly a melodic instrument. So rhythmically, you gotta hold on tuhyuh butts.

These are the things that I am thinking about when I look dazed and confused. Just give me a minute.

Playing on this tune night after night starts to reveal all of the rhythmic possibilities that are contained inside of four-on-the-floor.

I feel like I am swimming in an ocean or piloting a plane at times. I can go anywhere at any point but it has to make sense to keep people on for the ride.
