Who else saw this awesome sight? This was from Mary Mick in Defiance yesterday evening at sunset. A sun pillar beamed up into the sky.

Light pillars happen in general when you get a light source bouncing off a ton of plate-like ice crystals. It can happen at the ground with street lights when the air is still, and the temperature is below 5 degrees roughly. Ice crystals that develop can be plate-like and create these stunning light pillars. When the sun rises, this beam of light can hit these plate-like crystals aloft, where it is colder, and the light will scatter upward into a beam. Keep your eyes to the sky, we may see more of this as the winter goes along.
