This edition of On the Children's Shelf brought tears to my eyes. Thanks Jessica Collins, for this incredible AWARD-WINNING column. Did you know? Jessica won a national award (and many CT Press Club awards) for On the Children's Shelf. Jess is the co-founder of Ridgefield's Annual Giant Pumpkin Weigh Off and I'm happy to say, a wonderful friend.

Here's "Books and Friendships" written by Jess. Please follow her blog https://onthechildrensshelf.com/

Some of my early memories include characters in books. I remember them the way I remember childhood friends. Some were fleeting and I only knew them through a story I read once. Others were there for a longer period of time, perhaps a series that I read over the course of several years. Some were those special old friends who I revisited many times over the years as I jumped back into a favorite book. Some were friends I couldn’t wait to introduce my children to and hope they formed as special of a friendship.

Through books, I’ve cared for baby Wilbur along with Fern. I solved crimes with Nancy Drew. I learned magic with Harry Potter. I fought the evil squirrels with Miss Suzy. I was there when the wild rumpus started. I’ve cried with fictional characters. I’ve visited castles, islands, foreign lands, the places where fairytales exist with amazing friends as guides. While that life has existed inside of the pages of books, those friends I’ve met there, have changed me, made me a better person.

The one thing I never expected was for books to bring so many human friends into my life. I’ve shared so many favorite books with so many friends who were just as excited to dive into the story as I was. I’ve had brief conversations with people at library book sales when we’ve pointed out books we recommended to each other. I’ve had deep conversations about book series with friends that have lasted through all the books. I’ve received pictures texted to me of a book page with the message “you need to read this.” I’ve found books left on my front steps by dear friends who were excited to share them with me. I’ve learned through all those interactions that reading isn’t necessarily a solo event. Reading is social in its own way.

I never expected when I started writing about children’s books back on HamletHub’s Books Ink 12 years ago, that I would meet so many incredible people both in the pages of so many amazing books and in the community around me. My introduction to my dear friend, Sally, was literally, “She loves books as much as you do, you will be great friends.” Sally introduced me to my incredible friend, Kerry Anne, who has been one of the biggest cheerleaders of me writing this column.

While the characters in books become friends, stay with us, help us grow, challenge us, change us, and are always there for us, I’m so incredibly grateful for the real-life friends I’ve made because of books. Books are so much more than simply words on pages. If you are as lucky as I am, books will introduce you to some of the greatest people, both on paper and in real life.

Why Small Businesses Matter in Ridgefield made possible by Fairfield County Bank.
Local Business Champion: Travel Destinations By Danielle INC.
Meet founder, Danielle Duby Llamas.

Q: Why did you start your own business?
A: During my college years, I was majoring in Business and one of my college professors and I were discussing what my dream job looked like. I told him it was to have my own travel business since I was interested in the travel industry. As fate would have it, he advised me that they offered a travel, hospitality and tourism degree and encouraged me to speak with the Department head. It was that exact moment that I realized the perfect fit for me was to keep majoring in business while minoring in travel and tourism. Fast forward and here I am 20 years later! I am passionate about the travel industry and I love sharing my knowledge and helping others. The most satisfying part of my career is connecting with clients and helping them create their ideal trip (whether that be a honeymoon, family trip, or a check off their bucket list)!

Q: What is your bestselling product/service?
A: There are many services that I provide, just to name a few: * Completely curated travel Itineraries for International and Domestic destinations * Concierge services (ranging from dinner reservations, show tickets and anything in between), all-inclusive packages, all types of lodging (hotels, Airbnb's and luxury villas) * Destination weddings, bus rentals for small to large groups, cruises, sight-seeing tours etc.. all of which can be booked according to each client's individual needs. Furthermore, with over 20 years of experience in corporate and leisure travel, plus my Degree, my best product is myself due to my vast knowledge and experience. My clients find me pleasant to work with and are very thankful for the complimentary full service that I provide. It takes the stress and pressure off of them. I am with my clients from the very beginning until the conclusion of their trip!

Q: How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?
A: I always try to shop local and support our small businesses in town whenever possible. As a local business woman, I know the importance of supporting our businesses in the community and I am happy to do that every chance I get. Whether it be meeting a business sales associate in town at a local coffee shop such as Tusk n Cup, Queen B or The Meetinghouse, or taking my clients for a working lunch at a local restaurant such as The Lantern, Barn Door, Venice, Southwest Café or Gallo (to name a few) supporting local is a priority! Ira Joe Fisher's P-06877 "Ah, Now" (a sonnet)
"The busses are summered now in orderly rows.
Quiet now, the child laughter’s elsewhere.
The busses are summered now, it’s how it goes:
To giddy fun, ice cream, and a rest from scholared care.
School is a stern friend, but it’s quiet and closed
And still …in a brick and chalky time-off;
Pencils, lessons, and books are in a doze.
The air’s turned sunny and smiling and soft.
A school-year month is a long, slow slog
But a summer month is a bounce, a ball, a break
From high and grassy hill to frog-happy bog
To ball field, to toss-and-catch at the lake.
Treasure this day, look away from the coming fall
Each hour of light invites your joy, your fun, your all."
