🎹 I had the absolute best Piano Teacher ever! Evelyn Schraum. She was a caring and thoughtful lady.
I soaked up everything she taught me for the early years I took lessons, but then I quit in the 10th grade. She offered a small scholarship in memory of her husband, but you had to continue taking lessons through your senior year to be eligible. So, I thought I knew it all and decided to stop.
Out of my three siblings that took Piano, two of us stopped, and one continued through his senior year, my brother Bob, and he received the scholarship! Mrs. Schraum was so proud of him! I regretted quitting and as a matter of fact, I reconnected with Mrs. Schraum again for lessons as an adult in my 30s, and those were some of the best years of my life to spend time with her again. During that time, she had a stroke and was bed bound in a nursing home. When I went to see her, she commissioned me to start teaching piano, and I thought that was absolutely the craziest thing I’ve ever heard.
Here I am today with over 35 students and over 3 times that many in past years since I started teaching. I owe it all to her, and of course, my parents who provided the piano and the lessons. I didn’t get her scholarship, but I can now offer one in memory of her to my students who have continued lessons and playing music.
This year I am proud to honor Ariel Smith from Hampshire High School who took lessons starting around age 6 or 7 and continued until last year when her senior year activities dominated her life. But she has continued to sing and share her music!
Charlotte Brafford From Keyser High School has taken Piano Lessons from me for many years and also stopped in her senior year because of the demands of marching, concert, and jazz band.
Nicole Shaffer of Frankfort High School has taken lessons for three or four years, and is still taking up to graduation this month. She is a member of Frankforts Band! Nicole was my volunteer Flute teacher for the youth at Burlington Children’s Home every Sunday faithfully for 3 years.
I am proud of each one of these girls and their musical accomplishments, and they will be receiving The Studio C Evelyn Schraum Memorial Award upon graduation. 🎹
Best Wishes to each of you and I hope Music will always be a part of your future! Congratulations!
