🎤🎤 Top Tips for Toasts & Speeches 🎤🎤
1. 2-4 Minutes
2. Start with amusing, end with sweet and genuine
3. Talk about how you met, why you admire them, or advice for their new spouse
4. Use the mic properly - about an inch from your mouth (and pleeeease don't mic drop)
5. Prepare & Practice
This is just a place to start, but remember the reason why they asked you to speak: they love and trust you. They've trusted you to be part of their life and want to hear your take on the day and get your love and support. Be true to yourself. If you're naturally sentimental, lean into that. If you're naturally funny, lean into that. Don't try to be someone you aren't. They love you for who you are and want to see that in the speech.
The preparation and practice stage is essential. Don't try and memorize your speech. Remember that professionals use cue cards and teleprompters, you should use notes too. If you want to read it verbatim, that's fine too. In any case, practicing is only going to help get your message across. Also, we beg you not to wing it. It just never goes well, unless you're a lawyer, for some reason they usually happen to be excellent speech givers. A protip for writing it out: print it out and either bold or underline words at random every few sentences - this helps you keep your places when looking up at the audience then back down at your notes.
Also, don't be that guy - don't talk about exes, don't talk about embarrassing moments that would make them look bad. Instead, make them look like the guests of honor that they are. Make them look like rockstars. While this is a moment where you're in the spotlight, your job is to make the couple shine.
If you still need help, reach out to your entertainment professional, they've seen it all and can help.
