EDWARDS PLATEAU CRIMINAL INTERDICTION UNIT
PRESS RELEASE
ARREST MADE IN SCHOOL OVERDOSE CASE
In the early morning hours of September 21st, 2019, several Nueces Canyon youths were treated for life threatening injuries at area medical facilities. The Camp Wood area young people all attended a school sponsored activity earlier that evening and during the event secretly ingested an illicit and potentially lethal substance. Other students in the Rocksprings area were also victims of overdose around the same time period. By the grace of God none of the injured people died.
The Real County Sheriff’s Office and Edwards County Sheriff’s Office launched an investigation, along with the Nueces Canyon ISD administration, to seek out the facts and circumstances leading to these children’s potentially life threatening harm. The illegal substance ingested by the youths was identified as Benzodiazepine, AKA Xanax, and in one case the substance was laced with Fentanyl, an extremely dangerous chemical substance.
Our investigations are ongoing but both Sheriff Nathan T. Johnson and Sheriff Pamela L. Elliott
are pleased to announce the arrest of a central figure in the distribution of drugs to underage children in our communities. Other persons believed to be involved are in custody on unrelated drug charges while the investigation continues.
“Any and all adults associated with this case will be charged where Probable Cause can be established through evidence.” -- Sheriff Nathan T. Johnson
