The Town Crier launched operations with its first issue on Jan. 1, 1986.
The Town Crier’s founders are Lino Canales, Jr. and his wife Becky. Lino Canales emphasized, “We’ve had a lot of people who have helped us grow over the years. We feel very fortunate to still be growing, particularly in these times. At this point, we have the largest circulation of any newspaper in Starr County. We’re very hopeful about the future.”
Canales commented, “We’re trying to give the public a first class newspaper. We do thank all our advertisers and readers for being so loyal and supportive over all these years. Home delivery has been a big part of our success.”
He explained, “We consider the schools and children of Starr County a very high priority. We started special Christmas editions in the late 1990’s, and also began producing special editions celebrating the County Fair and the high school graduations. We are the first publication in Starr County to do these special editions.”
“The process of putting together a newspaper has changed significantly over the years, thanks to technology,” pointed out Canales. He noted that initial circulation was 10,000 per week, the newspaper’s circulation was increased to 12,000 per week in 2001 and 15,000 per week in 2008.
Canales noted that the Town Crier has been located at its current office on Norris Drive in R.G.C. since 1992. The first office was located near the El Chaparral Store on East Highway 83 in R.G.C.
