🎄 Unmuted Presence: Balancing Advocacy and Family Joy

It truly is the most wonderful time of the year! The tree is up, and this weekend is dedicated to unmuted presence—spending quality time with my kids, enjoying tree lightings, city parades, and all things Christmas magic 🤶.

(To my college student preparing for finals: sending all the love and focus! ❤️📚)

As advocates, we spend so much energy fighting for what's right in our systems and communities. But it is always necessary to take a step back from the advocacy work and intentionally pour back into the ones we advocate for the most: our own families.

Being a dedicated "ed mom" means being present in the classroom and the community, but it also means being fully present in our homes. This pause is not a weakness; it's a vital act of self-care and a necessary way to replenish the energy we use to drive change.

Wishing everyone an amazing weekend filled with joy, rest, and connection! What are you doing this weekend to recharge? 👇

One thing is certain: Senator Kenya Wicks shows up for District 34. She is present, approachable, and always willing to listen. Leaders like her are what we need at our State Capitol, advocating for us. I am honored to be partnering with her in advocating for Special Education in Clayton County.

💡 From Overwhelmed Parent to Empowered Advocate

My first IEP meeting felt like walking into a foreign country. Clueless 🤯, alone, and completely overwhelmed. 😔

The jargon was thick—all I could think was: What does this mean for my son? 🤔 Am I making the right decision? The concern of being "wrong" was heavy. 😥

I spent years navigating that complex process on my own. But every challenge became a lesson 📚, and every meeting built my knowledge. 💪

That journey is exactly why I am here now: to help other parents. ❤️

My mission is to gently guide you, share my hard-earned knowledge, and walk this road with you. You don't have to feel alone. 🤝

It's time for us to be heard. That is why I am . 🗣️

P.S. Have you been to an IEP meeting? What was your biggest struggle? Share in the comments! 👇

What an IMPACTFUL day of advocacy training in Clayton County this past weekend!!

GeorgiaCAN hosted this engaging advocacy training that welcomed advocates from across the South Metro Atlanta area. Attendees got a glimpse into school data, shared by Clayton County Public Schools, Parent Voice and School Board Engagement and Legislative Process.

Despite the training being cut short early due to a power outage, it didn't stop attendees from turning on their cellphone flashlights to receive the last presenter. Talk about literal Parent Power!!!

This day I remember so well!! In my son's earlier years he was not very verbal. A couple words here and there. It's what actually led me to being . To be his voice because he didn't at the time had the ability to use his.

It was holding his teachers accountable, ensuring he had all the tools needed to succeed and succeeding he is.

Anyway back to the story, I got him dressed to go to speech therapy and this day he gave me a full sentence, " Take a picture mommy, I am so happy!"
Wish I could show you his smile but I'm trying to protect him from the internet a bit. I was so emotional because he not only gave me a full sentence but he expressed his emotions at the time.

That was a HUGE milestone!!
Celebrate all milestones because the times go by so quickly. Journal it , however you choose, but in doing remember to keep advocating for your child/children. They need your voice and determination to ensure that they are not left behind...

Recently Tapestry Public Charter School together with GeorgiaCAN, hosted a community night in Clayton County. This event sought to share the vision and mission of the school and its unique model that would be opening a campus in the district Fall 2026.

It was a wonderful opportunity for parents to ask questions directly to administrators. The turnout shows there is interest in other options for middle and high schoolers . I am proud that I used my voice to advocate for this school to be welcomed in our county.

It is important that we take a step back at least one day a week for that mental and physical reset. It is so necessary to continue advocating for your babies. Unmuted Ed Mom: Equal Opportunity Advocate
