Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is still the world’s #1 cause of maternal deaths—especially in low- and middle-income countries. While high-income countries have nearly eliminated deaths from PPH, many women in Africa and South Asia continue to face preventable risks.

A new Special Collection published by the International Journal of Maternal and Child Health and AIDS (IJMA), in collaboration with Concept Foundation, shares powerful new evidence from nine countries on two important medicines:
• Heat-stable carbetocin (HSC) for preventing PPH
• Tranexamic acid (TXA) for treating PPH

Researchers studied 126,882 women, spoke with 678 healthcare providers, and gathered real-world data from 103 facilities across Africa and Asia. The results show that these medicines are safe, effective, feasible to use, and widely accepted—even in areas with limited resources or cold-chain challenges.
This collection is a major step forward in improving maternal health, strengthening health systems, and helping countries move closer to global goals for reducing maternal deaths.

New Study Shows Low Use of Lifesaving Labor-Monitoring Tool in Sub-Saharan Africa

A major review of 41 studies found that the partograph—a simple chart used during labor to prevent complications—is used only about half the time (51%) in Sub-Saharan African health facilities.

This is important because proper partograph use helps prevent:
❤️ Prolonged labor
❤️ Emergency C-sections
❤️ Stillbirths
❤️ Maternal deaths

The study calls for stronger training, support for healthcare workers, and better implementation of WHO recommendations to protect mothers and babies across the region.

💉 Protecting Girls, Preventing Cancer! 🌸
A new study from Kano, Nigeria, reveals encouraging — and eye-opening — insights about HPV vaccination among adolescent girls.

📍 Key Highlights:
✅ 62.5% of girls said they intend to receive the HPV vaccine.
👨‍👩‍👧 Girls who talked with their parents about the vaccine were almost 40 times more likely to want it.
💬 But those who only discussed it with friends were less likely to show interest.

💡 Many still have doubts about vaccine safety and necessity — showing why education and family discussions matter most.

🌍 New Study Published!

We’re excited to share our new publication:

📘 “Implementing WHO Differentiated Service Delivery Model for Pregnant and Breastfeeding Women and Infants Living with HIV: Insights from Kenyan Healthcare Providers,” in the International Journal of Maternal and Child Health and AIDS (IJMA).

💬 The study gathered insights from Kenyan clinicians, nurses, and mentor mothers working within the AMPATH network to understand how the WHO DSD model can be effectively applied to pregnant and breastfeeding women living with HIV and their infants.

💡 What we found:
✅ Providers see great promise in DSD to simplify care and reduce clinic burdens.
✅ However, they call for context-specific guidelines that reflect the realities of pregnancy, breastfeeding, and maternal well-being.
✅ Implementing a flexible yet structured model could strengthen PMTCT programs and improve health outcomes for mothers and babies.

📘 “Prevalence and Predictors of Mother-to-Child Transmission of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) among HIV-exposed Infants,” published in the International Journal of Maternal and Child Health and AIDS (IJMA).

👶 Conducted across four hospitals in Ghana’s Ashanti Region, the study found that 1 in 10 infants born to HIV-positive mothers contracted HIV — with rates nearly 6× higher in rural areas.

🌍 HIV is a major public health issue for pregnant women in Nigeria, affecting 7 in 100 women. A new study examines the key factors that drive HIV infection, with a special focus on conflict zones.

The study found that women in conflict areas are at a higher risk of HIV, largely due to younger age, lower education, and polygynous marriages. Furthermore, living in conflict zones nearly doubles the likelihood of HIV infection. Other significant factors include maternal age, wealth status, and recent non-marital sexual activity.
