Ever have problems with your gear on a shoot?
Us too. It happens 🤷🏻‍♀️

Since we can never get to the root of the problem while we're filming, we've made it a habit to take out the equipment on the off-days to make sure everything's in tip-top shape!

Most of the time, it's as simple as turning a setting off/on… or updating some firmware. But then there are times when we really have to put our heads together and figure out what's going on.

All of our team members shoot and produce their own side projects outside of the work they do here at RBM, so it's nice to have all the different perspectives attack the same problem.

Collaboration at its finest ✌️

We think we solved it this time around, but only time will tell!
Otherwise, it's back to the drawing board 😅

We’ve been trying some new approaches to our storytelling lately - breaking free of the one-on-one in interview format.

It’s crazy to think how less than 5 years ago we didn’t touch audio at ALL🫣 it felt like an art form we just couldn’t master.

But the more we started splicing snippets from interviews or ambient sounds from filming into our edits we noticed an authenticity that just spilled over into the videos and it totally shifted our perspective.

Fast forward to today, we’ve been getting a kick out of just roaming around with a recorder. Catching people off guard with an impromptu question or two seems to give our editors more insight into the overall vibe of the room - which is aaaaalways what we’re looking to do at the end of the day.

The minute we bring out the big lights, or we start hooking people up to lav mics, it seems like the nervousness gets the better of em and we loose out on the real-ness.

By experimenting with what equipment we can dial back has really shifted our storytelling. What clips ACTUALLY serve the story best? What elements push the story forward?

Last week we did a shoot with where we interviewed execs throughout the construction industry and when we sat down with he said something that just hit me like a ton of bricks!

I don’t remember what the question was, but THIS quote was his answer. At first I thought he was crazy, spitting oxymorons like he was Eminem in a freestyle battle…

But after a few minutes a light bulb turned on in my head. Ahhh, OF COURSE! That makes sense!

I can recall very few times in my life where my efforts were actually moving the needle forward & it wasn’t from the short sprints. It was always at a time where I was moving slower.. more methodically, almost.

When you slow down you start to see things you normally wouldn’t have. You can observe and recognize when you need to pivot or double down in different areas.

Crazy, RIGHT? Seems counterintuitive, but it’s like attempting to build a sky rise in DTLA. How do you get it done fast? By moving one brick at a time.

Nick reminded me of two things during that interview… the first being that it’s the small incremental steps that have the MOST impact on your trajectory. So never downplay the long game

… and the second being Nick should carve out a niche for himself as a motivational rapper, cause if his quote can cut through the noise in MY brain, there’s no telling who he’d reach on the big stage.😆👌

Look, do you REALLY think we create content every. Single. Day?!

The thought alone makes the anxiety bubbles start to rise 😅

is the name of the game! Choose one day a week or month (whatever tickles your fancy) and batch all your content.

We know it’s easy for us to talk for hours on end, so we use this method. We write out topics and then just ramble for ten minutes.

This may work for you, or it could be visiting a job site and filming 10 different elements for 1min each - same concept applies!
