Foust named lone finalist for Northwest ISD superintendent

Press release from Northwest ISD

The Northwest ISD Board of Trustees has unanimously endorsed their choice for the next leader of the school district, voting 7-0 to name Dr. Mark Foust as lone finalist for the superintendent of schools position. Dr. Foust brings experience maintaining high academic and extracurricular standards while managing fast growth.

For the past six years, Dr. Foust has served as superintendent of Kerrville ISD in central Texas, where he has earned a reputation as a strong instructional leader who places student needs first. During his tenure as superintendent, Kerrville ISD implemented new STEM instructional programs, expanded career and technical education opportunities, and passed a significant bond program to revitalize schools. Kerrville ISD earned distinction as an HEB Excellence in Education Small District State Finalist and a top-10 UIL Lone Star Cup finisher during his tenure.

Prior to joining Kerrville ISD, Dr. Foust spent the first 21 years of his professional career in Fort Bend ISD, a fast-growth school district in the Houston area. He began his career as an English teacher and coach in 1995 before becoming an associate principal and principal at the high school level. He transitioned into a district leadership role as an assistant superintendent overseeing three high school feeder patterns before serving as chief of schools and overseeing educational services at all 74 schools in the district.

Over the course of his 27-year career in public education, Dr. Foust has earned accolades for his leadership, including serving as a Texas Association of School Administrators mentor for new superintendents, receiving a nomination for ESC Region 20 Superintendent of the Year and assisting in the cultivation of a pilot program for a small district category in the Holdsworth Center for Learning Campus Leadership Program.

Dr. Foust said Northwest ISD has a rich history of providing exceptional educational opportunities for students and has earned an impeccable reputation for strong academic, athletic, fine arts and extracurricular programs. He called the district a “point of pride and prestige for the 14 cities, municipalities and towns it serves.”

“Northwest ISD is a destination school district in Texas – it is a highly sought-after place for families to raise their children, and a district where teachers and staff team with other incredibly talented people to serve all children in the community,” he explained. “I look forward to Northwest ISD continuing to be a strong leader in preparing children for the next chapters of their lives and providing families with the best educational environment in the state.”

Trustees announced the selection at their regular December 12 board meeting following an application review process, three rounds of interviews and internal deliberations. Following the unexpected passing of former superintendent Dr. David Hicks, trustees again relied on the same community input provided in 2021 to guide their search process.

This input shaped a candidate profile focused on four key areas: success in student achievement across all school-related aspects, fast-growth school district experience, fiscal responsibility and excellent communication skills. Throughout each step of the superintendent search process, trustees sought these qualities to adhere to the input provided by the district’s community.

Dr. Anne Davis-Simpson, president of the Northwest ISD Board of Trustees, said on behalf of its members that Dr. Foust’s background aligns with the board and community’s vision to move Northwest ISD forward.

“During our search, we received applications from dozens of highly qualified candidates and interviewed several well-regarded leaders, and Dr. Foust repeatedly impressed the board with his background and how it matched our community’s input,” she said. “Throughout the search process, Dr. Foust’s actions and background emphasized our district’s first core belief that kids come first. He is a leader who understands the importance of developing every aspect of a student and respects the value a community brings to its schools.”

Once officially hired, Dr. Foust will lead the fastest-growing school district in North Texas as it experiences unprecedented growth in the decades ahead. Northwest ISD’s total enrollment now grows at an annual rate of 2,000 additional students per year, which doubles the district’s previous year-over-year enrollment growth rates. With boundaries that encompass 234 square miles combined with the district’s reputation and a robust housing market, projections indicate the district’s growth will last for decades.

Dr. Foust earned his Doctor of Education in professional leadership from the University of Houston and his Master of Education in administration and supervision from the University of Houston-Victoria. He earned his bachelor’s degree in history from Texas A&M University.

As Dr. Foust prepares to lead Northwest ISD during a period of unprecedented growth, he will meet with key groups – including students, families, teachers, school and district leaders, local government leaders, and more – over the next several months. A community reception to meet the new district leader will take place in January, with event details to come in the coming weeks.

“I am honored and excited to become part of the Northwest ISD community. Serving as superintendent of schools in this district is truly a blessing, and I look forward to continuing the strong traditions of excellence here,” he said. “I plan to work hand in hand with the Board of Trustees, staff and community to meet the needs of every student and ensure the highest quality of education for our nation’s most valuable resource, our children.”

In compliance with state law, Dr. Foust must remain the lone finalist for superintendent for 21 days before the school board can officially offer him the position. Tentatively, he will begin the role in January. At that time, Dr. Foust will lead day-to-day operations of Northwest ISD and collaborate with the school board to steer the long-term vision for the fastest-growing school district in North Texas.

CLEVON completes first North American autonomous delivery

Press release

FORT WORTH, TEXAS – December 13, 2022 – Clevon, a global autonomous delivery innovator founded in Estonia, performed its first U.S. autonomous delivery with CLEVON 1, the company’s flagship multi-platform all-electric robot courier at the AllianceTexas Mobility Innovation Zone (MIZ) in Fort Worth.

This cooperation comes less than three months after the company moved its U.S. headquarters to the MIZ.

“This is a momentous day between the growing partnership between Clevon and Hillwood as CLEVON 1 made its first successful delivery through an urban environment in the U.S.,” said Meelis Anton, Clevon’s U.S. chief operating officer. “With demand for autonomous last-mile delivery solutions booming on a global scale, Clevon is forever changing the way in which goods are transported, logging over 12,000 miles autonomously delivering goods abroad, and now here in the U.S., Hillwood’s Mobility Innovation Zone platform is helping Clevon advance and commercialize our autonomous technology, and we look forward to continued deployments in the future.”

CLEVON 1, working with real-time obstacles, delivered gourmet meals from O’Neill’s Inflight Catering to Alliance Aviation Services team members in the new, fixed-based operation (FBO) facility at Perot Field Fort Worth Alliance Airport. The robot courier traveled along the 3.6-mile route adjacent to I-35W traveling along Eagle Parkway, turning southbound on Heritage Parkway before arriving at its destination, 13901 Aviator Way. The combination of fast-service area mapping, telesupervision and autonomous driving capabilities enables CLEVON 1 to be deployed in new service areas in a very efficient way.

Clevon’s expansion into the North American market comes as the pressure from businesses and consumers to offer on-demand, same-day or next-day delivery of goods continues to skyrocket. Clevon’s driverless robot couriers shall drive on public roads and enable the transportation of goods to be more energy-efficient, cost-effective and scalable. CLEVON 1 has been tested on public roads in Europe for over two years and is proven to be safe and reliable. It is environmentally focused with zero CO2 emissions and reduces last-mile delivery labor costs by up to 90%.

“Businesses will need to differentiate and innovate their last-mile delivery solutions to compete in a marketplace where on-demand delivery options dominate,” said Ian Kinne, director of logistics innovation at Hillwood. “AllianceTexas and our Mobility Innovation Zone continue to be the go-to place for mobility visionaries to comprehensively scale and commercialize new technologies. By connecting to the established infrastructure and ecosystem at the MIZ, Clevon’s forward-thinking technology will enable them to provide alternative last-mile solutions in the supply chain here in North Texas.”

Recently expanding its services and opening a location at Perot Field Fort Worth Alliance Airport, O'Neill's Inflight Catering provides first-class catering services to the growing private airplane community. O'Neill's kitchen operations are 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

“Fort Worth has been the place to be for a long time now, and we’re thrilled to partner with Clevon and Hillwood at the AllianceTexas MIZ to demonstrate this new technology,” said Neill Reagan, owner of O’Neill’s Inflight Catering. “Today’s accomplishment shows the direct benefit to businesses looking to solve recurring, on-demand delivery needs. We want people to enjoy our food any way they can get it, and it’s even better when it’s environmentally friendly and contributes toward a climate-neutral economy.”

Hillwood and Alliance Aviation Services recently opened the new, highly-amenitized FBO facility at Perot Field Fort Worth Alliance Airport, combining award-winning service and state-of-the-art accommodations with innovation. The 209,000-square-foot facility at 13901 Aviator Way includes 68,000 square feet of additional hangar space that supports general and corporate aviation as well as military and air cargo operations.

Press release from Charles Schwab

Charles Schwab Foundation makes nearly $600K in grants, scholarships to support financial literacy in DFW

WESTLAKE, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Building on its decades-long commitment to financial literacy, Charles Schwab commemorated the one-year anniversary of its signature financial education program, Moneywise America™, by welcoming 220 Uplift Education students to its Westlake headquarters for an all-day financial literacy field trip and surprising students with a $1,000 scholarship to support post-secondary education opportunities.

In addition to $220,000 in scholarships, other grants announced at the event included:

-$220,000 to support ongoing, in-school financial education for all high school seniors in the Uplift Education network, taught by Moneywise America-trained volunteers during the 2022-2023 school year.

-$100,000 to Donors Choose, a national education nonprofit, to support funding for local teachers’ financial education projects.

-$25,000 to The Players Company, a collective of current and former professional athletes dedicated to enabling wealth-generation in under-resourced communities and educating youth and young adults in financial literacy.

“Access to financial education is disproportionate in our country, which is why Schwab is making free, high-quality financial education accessible to young people across the U.S.,” said Carrie Schwab-Pomerantz, president of Charles Schwab Foundation. “When people are financially literate, they’re more likely to go to college, have higher credit scores, and do better at work. They’re also better prepared to manage financial shocks that can derail their goals. We are honored and excited to celebrate the anniversary of Moneywise America here in Schwab’s hometown community and to support nonprofits focused on financial wellness across the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex.”

Yasmin Bhatia, CEO of Uplift Education, said, “Far too many schools in our region and across the country are not sufficiently resourced to offer financial education alongside their core curricula. On behalf of more than 23,000 students at our 45 schools across Dallas-Fort Worth, we are grateful to Schwab for making Moneywise America available to our students today—as well as every student in America—and for their demonstrated commitment to improving financial literacy at Uplift schools and across the metroplex.”

Uplift Education serves a diverse range of students from low-to-moderate income neighborhoods.

Moneywise America and the financial literacy event aim to help level the economic playing field for teens across America, especially those in under-resourced communities. Moneywise America builds upon Schwab’s decades-long legacy of financial wellness programming, which has benefited millions.

Money Matters, a financial literacy program created by Schwab in partnership with Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA), has reached more than 1.1 million teens at BGCA clubs across the United States.
With DonorsChoose, Schwab designed the Innovation Challenge to fund and support development of new classroom financial literacy projects that have reached more than one million students across all 50 states.

Schwab sponsors SIFMA Foundation’s annual Capitol Hill Challenge™, a curriculum-based investment simulation that helps bridge the financial education gap for youth in under-resourced communities by pairing members of Congress with low-income schools to advance financial capability, capital markets literacy and civics education.
