Mushroom season is among us!🍄🍄🍄
Here are a few tips that I’ve always used to increase my harvest😁
#1: I always look on the south/southeast facing slopes first. If I’m trying to be a real early bird getting the worm I’ll focus along rock piles or bigger rocks in an area that hold heat in earlier in the spring. Usually on average 2 weeks later I’ll start finding them on the North sides of the mountains in some flats
#2: I have a tendency of walking fast until I find one (when looking for new spots) then slowing down once I find one. It may not work for everyone but it helps me increase my yield.
#3: When I start finding them, I look at the trees associated with them. It may be a coincidence but if I find them under a different poplar tree for instance I’ll look up the tree and follow the biggest branches out and that’s usually where I’ll find the bulk of the mushrooms under the tree.
#4: when looking for new spots I constantly keep an eye out for a couple of things that have helped me the most finding mushrooms. Number 1 is the eastern box turtle! Anytime I’ve found box turtles in the spring, mushrooms have been in the close vicinity. Number 2 would be turkey scratching, and I dont just mean a little spot where a turkey has scratched I’m talking about a bigger spot with multiple scratchings in an area. I’m not sure if it disrupts the mycelium and makes them pop up more or if they just love them as much as I do so they are searching for them😁
#6: Go mushroom hunting after the rain or during the rain. Remember the old saying about learning to dance in the rain. When it’s raining the leaves around on the forest floor are pushed down and it makes a world of difference trying to find something when the leaves aren’t a few inches taller than the mushroom.
#7: This is the most important tip I can give you, take a kid mushroom hunting. They are slower which will help you look longer in an area. They are shorter to the ground which helps them find them better. Let them hold one while looking for another and don’t get frustrated when they trample a few. Besides the time spent with the youth in the great outdoors is more of a treasure than you’ll be searching for and it’s easily overlooked!
Happy mushroom hunting y’all and I hope yall have a great season💪🏼
