All the world’s a stage… and in Staunton, Virginia, Shakespeare takes center stage!

For this episode of Virginia Roots, in partnership with Virginia Department of Education - VDOE, we stopped by the American Shakespeare Center’s Blackfriars Playhouse to learn more about the people keeping Shakespeare’s work alive right here in the Commonwealth.

We sat down with the team to hear how the American Shakespeare Center got its start, what makes the Blackfriars Playhouse such a unique place to experience live theater, and how they bring Shakespeare’s stories to audiences today.

From centuries-old plays to a one-of-a-kind Virginia stage, discover how Shakespeare still inspires performers and audiences alike.

🏆 Another Emmy nomination for Hometowns!

We’re excited to share that Hometowns: Fayetteville, AR has been nominated for a Mid-America Emmy Award in the Lifestyle category!

This recognition is especially meaningful because it comes from a different regional Emmy chapter, further demonstrating that Hometowns and the stories we tell are resonating with audiences well beyond Southwest Virginia.

From Appalachia to Arkansas and communities across the country, Hometowns celebrates the people, places, traditions and stories that make every community unique.

We’re incredibly proud to see this PBS Appalachia original receive recognition on another Emmy stage!

The musicians are from Blacksburg high school in Montgomery County who made the trip at 5 AM to play for the state board. (Video in comments).

Did you know one of Virginia’s State Parks has wild ponies? 🐴

Grayson Highlands State Park is truly something special. Not only are you treated to breathtaking Mountain View’s Rocky outcrops and sweeping grassy highlands, but you may also spot beautiful ponies, roaming and grazing along your hike!

There’s some fascinating history behind this incredible place, too. Grayson Highlands was established in 1965 originally under the name Mount Rogers State Park. The park was later renamed Grayson Highlands, and today it sits near Mount Rogers, Virginia’s highest peak.

The ponies were introduced the Highlands in 1974 to graze the grassy mountain “balds” and help prevent them from becoming forested again. Today the herd is managed by the Wilburn Ridge Pony Association, helping preserve both ponies and the beautiful open landscape visitors enjoy.

If you visit, remember that these ponies are wild animals. Admire them from a safe distance and never feed or pet them.
