Joseph
Joseph, the stepfather of Jesus, is too often skipped over during the nativity season or simply brushed aside as a bystander in what God was doing. But what he did took so much faith and courage in the face of a religious community that would have shunned Mary and him both. He definitely received a crash course of trusting God as Mary returned home from her three month visit with Elizabeth. Joseph struggled with the issue at hand, as any man would today, but in his community they stoned women who were pregnant outside of marriage. He was betrothed to Mary, and I’m sure loved her deeply because the decision of what to do did not come easy. Options; there are always options in life that we must seek to choose the better of, but the options for Joseph were not pleasant. Does he divorce Mary quietly or let the community know what she has done and allow the Law to determine her fate? Love or not, the stark reality is that his betrothed is pregnant and it is not his child.
I am not sure how long it took for him to finally get to sleep, but then it happened . . . it was a dream, but it was more than a dream; it was so real, so life-like. In the middle of the worst night of his life Joseph receives the best news of his life . . . marrying Mary is the way God wants it to be. The reason that Mary is pregnant is not because of some wayward fling, but because God chose her to be His channel of blessing for the entire world. Joseph is invited to join God in what He is doing; saving mankind from eternal hell. As further confirmation he is even given the name for the coming child: JESUS . . . “Jehovah Saves.” (Read it in Matthew 1:18-25)
Isn’t it the darkest times in our lives that drive us to seek God the most? When we feel so lost and we beg God to share His wisdom with us; I’m sure Joseph sought God with all his strength on that night. God’s answer doesn’t always come as quickly as I would like, but when He answers, I know it is Him. “When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife.” (Matthew 1:24) What would Christmas look like if Joseph had decided to “put Mary away quietly”? What trickle down effect would have taken place and possibly robbed the world of “God’s Peace on Earth”?
As we prepare ourselves to celebrate the birth of the Christ Child ask yourself this question: Which will change my loved ones’ lives the most this Christmas . . . gifts wrapped in shiny paper and laying under the Christmas tree? Or, the Christ who was wrapped in swaddling cloths and laid in the manger?
