A legendary area resident and his connections to two of America’s most notorious historical figures will be explored during a special presentation at the Crawford County Historical Museum.

Local historian Greg Parrott will present “The Hermit of the Wabash: Associated with John Wilkes Booth and John Brown” at the museum on South Cross at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 27.

Summer may be winding down but Palestine is just getting ready for its annual Labor Day weekend activities.

Palestine’s 72nd annual Labor Day Celebration is Friday, Sept. 4, to Monday, Sept. 7. As always, it will feature music, food, fun, a parade and, of course, the Pioneer City Rodeo.

For the third time this summer, Crawford County found itself under the threat of a tornado in late July.

But while strong winds caused considerable damage here and in Clark County, where Lincoln Trail State Park was temporarily closed for cleanup, the potential twister that blasted through the area July 27 never touched down.

It wouldn’t be the Flat Rock Homecoming without a parade. The 50th anniversary edition of the annual event included firetrucks, side-by-sides and other ATVs, the Robinson High School Marching Maroons and, of course, plenty of candy tossed to eager young onlookers. Homecoming began in 1976 as a local celebration of the U.S. Bicentennial.

An Illinois State Police special agent says Matthew V. Miller’s DNA was found at the scene of a 2014 murder.

Special Agent Lucas Schilling testified in Crawford County Circuit Court Aug. 10 that blood containing Miller’s DNA was found at the site of the shooting death of Norman England.

Miller, 46, Flat Rock, faces a first-degree murder charge in the death of England, 74, Freelandville, Ind. The older man was found dead from a .22-caliber gunshot wound at his son’s rural Flat Rock residence about 8 a.m. Aug. 21, 2014.

An arrest has been made in a 12-year-old rural Flat Rock murder.

Illinois State Police Division of Criminal Investigation Zone 8 officers arrested Matthew V. Miller, 46, Flat Rock, Friday on a charge of first-degree murder following an extensive investigation into the cold case shooting death of Norman England.

Mary Laughead, formerly of Palestine and Heathsville, died July 27 at Carle Richland Memorial Hospital in Olney. Born Mary Amelia Burkett in 1914, she turned 112 on May 3.

After more than 112 years, Crawford County’s oldest native has died.
