Across the country, high school teachers are rethinking how to assess students – and make sure those students are really learning and not just relying on AI without learning skills and content.

Teachers are reconsider grading and testing. Some are asking students to do all of their scored work in person, by hand. Others are leaning on participation grades. Some are focused more on process and how you get to a final understanding or project. Discussion, presentation, and in-class work has taken on additional significance.

Google enabled Gemini Chatbot for all K-12 students, unless a district turns off Gemini access. In the past it was only available to students that were 18+ years of age. It took place over the summer and schools are still figuring out what to do. They only schools that saw no change had already disabled Gemini for students or their school.

Schools wrestle with the question of whether to permit or prohibit access to the AI chatbot.
