The ROCovery Fitness 5k and X-Challenge took place at 9 am on Saturday, September 18th in Mendon Ponds Park. According to their website, the run/walk is a “celebration of fitness and recovery, and is an important fundraiser for this life-saving organization”.

ROCovery Fitness is a community and workout group focused on sober living and providing opportunities for sober experiences and groups for those recovering from drug or alcohol addiction. As a not-for-profit organization, they aim to “instill hope in the hopeless.”

In the end, 532 individuals took part in the event. Considering it costs runners around $35 to enter, it provides a significant amount of fundraising for the ROCovery Fitness team and its community.

On Friday, September 16, students, faculty, and community members flooded the Patricia O’Keefe Ross Gallery at St. John Fisher University for the opening of Quajay Donnell’s “How I See It”.

Quajay Donnell has lived in Rochester for 15 years, and his appreciation for the city is evident in his photography. The majority of the 30 photos in his show feature street art located throughout Rochester.

At a school like Fisher, where subjects such as biology and nursing reign supreme, it can often feel like the arts are an afterthought, or perhaps not even a consideration. The evening spent at the gallery, however, with Donnell’s work gave Fisher community members a chance to see how vital art is to the success of any institution.

“You have to be kind to ease the pains of reality.” - BSU President Lilliana Weldeslassie

On May 14th of this 2022, 10 Black citizens were fatally shot in a Buffalo Tops Supermarket. This was done in a purposeful act of violence towards the Black community.

BSU held a tribute featuring a speech from Weldeslassie, where she not only paid homage to the lives lost but urged the St. John Fisher community to practice antiracism.

It’s no secret that college is expensive, but nursing school has grown to cost even more than other students will likely pay.

“There are so many little things that nursing majors have to pay for that no one thinks about” said junior Kelsey Cahalan . From parking passes, to nursing fees, to clinical equipment, books, and more.

Campus Ministry held a formal gala for students and the community on Saturday, February 26. In the end, the event sold over 100 tickets and raised over $1,000 to fund the upcoming service trip to Houston, Texas.

The atmosphere was full of community and joy and it was an overall celebration of being together just for the sake of it,” Junior Nursing student and peer minister Maria Robinson said.

Peer minister Alyson Witt says she hopes that this gala would become “the first of many”.

"I was left to pray in empty classrooms between classes,” Graduate student Oumou Wague said.

After weeks of preparation, a new prayer and meditation space for students and faculty is now ready to use. This space — known as The Quiet Place — was created with the intention of giving students who do not practice the Christian faith a place to meditate and pray that is close to classes. The Quiet Place is located on the third floor of the nursing building.

Beginning Wednesday March 2nd, masks will no longer be required in classrooms or laboratories on campus for those who are fully vaccinated, school officials announced in an email sent out Tuesday.

This update comes one week after the announcement of the partial lift of the on-campus mask mandate and is reflective of both Center of Disease Control guidelines and the continued decrease of positive cases on campus.
According to the college, this decision is based on “a new set of metrics and community transmission level categories” provided by the CDC.

Originally, students who took classes at Fisher for at least three semesters are able to keep their iPad upon graduation. However, thanks to funds from the American Rescue Plan, graduating seniors can now apply the grant to the cost of the iPad if they want to keep it.

In order for students to receive the funds from the grant, the Office of Student Financial Services sent a survey to students who are set to graduate in May 2022 and who have received an iPad bundle.

St. John Fisher College announced Tuesday morning an updated mask policy. Masks are now only required in classrooms, laboratories, the health and wellness center, and campus shuttles for fully vaccinated individuals.

This change means that for those who are fully vaccinated, masks are now optional in all other indoor spaces on campus. Unvaccinated individuals with an approved exemption and those who are not up-to-date with their vaccination are still required to mask in all indoor spaces.

Many St. John Fisher College students have mixed feelings about being back on campus earlier than other schools in the area and while still in the midst of a pandemic.

For Fisher, the spring semester began on January 10 — giving students a three-week winter break, instead of the usual four weeks.

Although Fisher decided to shorten the break and start earlier, other surrounding schools didn’t seem to take the same approach. This includes Nazareth which began its semester on January 17, Lemoyne started on the 23, and Syracuse University did not begin its spring semester until January 24th.
