The Divide | Canada Eyes Europe, Germany Splits & Monroe County’s Privacy Vote
� Canada is looking toward Europe. Germany’s political center is under pressure. And here at home, Monroe County has a 29–0 biometric privacy vote on the books — but the final enactment trail still matters.

Canada and the European Union are exploring a new “associate member” relationship as Ottawa looks to diversify beyond the United States. Germany woke up to major regional election results that strengthened parties on both the right and the left while weakening traditional establishment parties.
Here in Monroe County, legislators voted unanimously to adopt a biometric-disclosure measure — but the available county record still does not establish that it has completed every step required to become effective law.

� CANADA LOOKS TO EUROPE
The European Commission has proposed making Canada the EU’s first “associate member,” a category that does not currently exist in EU treaties. The details are still being worked out — but the economic and strategic implications for the U.S.–Canada relationship are significant.
� GERMANY SPLITS
The AfD finished first in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania while the Left Party won Berlin. Traditional parties lost ground in both contests, raising larger questions about energy costs, housing, immigration, and the weakening political center.
