5/25 Independent & Artist's Photography Books 5/25 was founded out of a love for books. Photography books to be specific. So that’s what we’re all about at 5/25.

And although we love all good photo books, we especially love those special books that you can’t find just anywhere. Independently published books, handmade or limited edition books, self published books, and of course artist’s books, the ultimate photo book where the book itself is the art object. We don’t know about where you’re from, but here where we’re located, in Metro Detroit, there’s not a

lot of bookstores where you can find these types of photography books (as far as we know we’re the only one). Usually, you have to go searching around online to find them at all. Not that we’re against finding things online, in fact we love finding things on the internet. That’s why we post all of the books we feature here at 5/25 on our website, so even if you don’t live in Metro Detroit, you have a new resource for viewing and purchasing indie and artist’s photo books. If you do live in Metro Detroit, however, you’re in for a real treat. Now you actually have somewhere you can go to look at and buy these types of books in person! So other than actually having a brick and mortar location in Metro Detroit, what makes 5/25 so special? Well, one of the main things is we’re a non-profit bookstore. So all of the proceeds from any of the books we sell go right back to the artists or publishers. Which is great if you’re an artist or independent publisher for three reasons.

1. Because now you have another outlet promoting and selling your books online.
2. You also get to have your books on display in an actual bookstore for an audience that you had no opportunity of reaching previously.
3. You get both of the first two great things while getting to keep all of the profits from any books you sell. It’s also pretty great if you’re someone who’s interested in collecting indie or artist’s photo books, because not only do you have a great new source for buying books, but you’re also helping support the artist’s and publishers who are actually creating them by giving them 100% of the money you spend on them. If you’re in the Metro Detroit area and you’d like to come visit our store, visit our website for directions. If you’re a artist or publisher and you’d like to submit a book for display and sale in our bookstore, visit our website to download our submissions form.

Call for Submissions/Upcoming Online Gallery

DCCP is thrilled to announce the upcoming launch of PAGES, a new online gallery that showcases the photobook. The photobook takes the photograph off of the wall and provides an alternative space for the viewer to experience an image. At DCCP, we are interested in the ways in which the photograph can be (and, in fact, is swiftly being) expanded. It is no longer tied to the white wall. What happens to an image when it exists solely on the screen—or in the pages of a book?

Being a DCCP member is not required for submissions, but we encourage you to join and help support DCCP's initiate.

We’ve gotten several new books in lately at 5/25, the first of which is Dave Jordano’s excellent Assembled Works. Dave had it published in 2003 by Paper Mirror Press in Chicago, as a promotional piece while he was one of the premier food and product photographers in the country. The perfect bound book contains 35 very nicely reproduced black & white images of industrial landscapes and architectural details from in and around the greater Chicago area. While Dave’s images are rooted firmly in the modernist tradition, containing the rich texture and detail one would expect from images shot with a view camera, they often display minimalist sensibilities as well. Although in black & white, the high degree of craft evident in this work serves as an excellent precursor to his current color documentary style work.

Highly recommended for fans of modernism, minimalism, architecture, and industrial photography. 5/25 currently has 4 signed copies of Assembled Works available.

We’re happy to present our very first book here at 5/25, Gathering Calm, Photographs: 1994-2004 by Bill Schwab. It’s a very nicely produced, high quality book, printed in 2005 by North Light Press. The book contains 36 of Bill’s beautiful, slightly warm toned black-and-white images reproduced at same size as the original prints. 5/25 currently has two signed copies of Gathering Calm available.

About Us! :)

5/25 was founded out of a love for books. Photography books to be specific. But not just any old photography book will do. What we especially love are the special books that you can’t find just anywhere. Independently published books, self published books, handmade or limited edition books, and artist’s books, where the book doesn’t just contain artwork, rather the book is the art object itself.
