Jonah is a prophet whom God commands to preach repentance to the wicked city of Nineveh. Instead of obeying, Jonah tries to flee by sailing toward Tarshish. A violent storm forces the sailors to throw him overboard, and he is swallowed by a great fish, where he spends three days and nights before being released. Jonah then goes to Nineveh, delivers God’s message, and the people repent. God shows mercy to the city, which frustrates Jonah, revealing the book’s deeper themes of compassion, obedience, and God’s universal mercy.
