Starting Year 2 of It's a Lot strong with an interview with Robin Wilt (Robin For US ), a mom who has been through a LOT with her 3 kids and is now running for Congress πŸ™Œ I appreciated Robin opening up about some of her experiences as a mother, like her oldest facing severe racial harassment at school and her youngest coming out as trans and encountering policies being changed to bar her from competing in the sport she excelled at.

Becoming a mom has radicalized my own politics and made me a lot more progressive, and Robin said she feels the same way. If you can relate, you'll love this episode. Listen to the full conversation on It's a Lot, out now wherever you get your podcasts! 🩷

May was an excellent reading month! If you're looking for some fun reads for summer, here are some of our recent favorites:

πŸ‘‰ ALAN OPTS OUT by Courtney Maum -- This delightful novel focuses on an ad man who starts to question the way he's pushed overconsumption throughout his career and decides to live in his daughters' enormous play house in their backyard, befriending a lobster and foregoing shoes, among other things πŸ˜… His online shopping-obsessed wife is appalled, as she's trying to get into a snooty women's club in their Connecticut town and finally has her chance this summer. Things unfold in an unhinged, perfect way. I enjoyed every second of this book and the author did a great job sticking the ending, writing something that doesn't betray the sentiments of the book or wrap things up too neatly.

πŸ‘‰ POT SHOT by Laura Piper Lee -- A hilarious read that's full of emotion (and some steamy scenes, too). Our protagonist, Nomi, has Crohn's disease and is opening her own dispensary. Her high school crush is now temporarily a doctor at the local clinic and despises cannabis. They have a very awkward, accidental reunion and things escalate from there. The character development in this book was particularly excellent! Loved this one.

Happy reading, folks!

My podcast, It's a Lot, is one year old today πŸ’€πŸ₯³πŸ©· I'm incredibly grateful to everyone who's listened, shared it with a friend, enjoyed the memes I've made, been a guest on the show, written a review, brainstormed with me, or shared reactions to episodes. It means so much to me and makes the show worth doing.

Can't wait to have more honest conversations about all the things that are a lot in our lives during Year 2! Check out the second to last slide for instructions on how to win an It's a Lot sticker this week 😁 One way to do that is to share a favorite episode or a suggestion for a future guest or topic in the comments πŸ‘‡ Let's hear 'em!

The final episode of Year 1 of It's a Lot is out today, and it features the inimitable Kristina Ten, author of TELL ME YOURS, I'LL TELL YOU MINE πŸ™ŒπŸ₯³πŸŽ‰ This was such a fun conversation--I could've talked to Kristina for hours! I was glad we had a chance to record IRL before she moved back to the west coast.

This episode is for you if:

➑️ you know what the cool S is
➑️ you've made a cootie catcher
➑️ you love folklore and have a soft spot for Baba Yaga
➑️ you're an AI hater
➑️ unlikable characters are kinda your jam
➑️ you've contemplated how weird and flawed memory is.

Last fall on It's a Lot, Pauly Guglielmo and I chatted about our worries that we'll inevitably traumatize our kids. This week's episode feels like an accidental follow-up to that one--I got to talk to Kenya Malcolm, PhD , a clinical psychologist specializing in infant/early childhood mental health and supporting caregivers, about how our anxieties can impact our kids, how to parse all the parenting advice you see online, what helps establish trust in parent/child relationships, and how we can keep growing and changing alongside our kids as they grow up 🩷

There was a ton of food for thought in this episode! I'm going to be thinking about it for a long time to come. I hope you'll get something helpful out of it too. Kenya is a gem!

Listen to the full conversation now wherever you get your podcasts--just search "It's a Lot" and look for the pink logo with a skeleton hand holding a phone.

I don't know about you, but everything feels like a lot lately (ha ha, name of my podcast). Here's a light, fun book recommendation for you to escape into this month!

MAID TO SKATE by Suzushiro is an entertaining story of exactly what it looks like: maids who skateboard! And they skateboard extraordinarily well 🀯 They have all kinds of silly adventures, many of which defy physics. It's a good time!

I've admired Hayley DeRoche's work for years, from her Sad Beige content critiquing the bland aesthetic of some kids' products pushed on parents to her dΓ©tournement poetry critiquing algorithms and what we're pressured to pay attention to online and IRL. After reading an ARC of their wonderful book Dress Your Baby in Sage and Taupe: A Handbook for the Sad Beige Parent, I decided to shoot my shot and message them on Substack. Hayley was down to chat, and we had an awesome conversation for It's a Lot!

We talked about her journey as a creative, how she learned to write funny, parenting through grief, and her experiences with fostering and transracial adoption. I loved their reflections on what a joy it is to see your kids become themselves 🩷 Even if that means they love Jar Jar Binks πŸ™ˆ

Listen to the episode now wherever you get your podcasts! And Hayley's book is out now--find it at your favorite indie bookstore or your local library ☺️
