Electroacoustic Music Studios at Eastman EMuSE will foster musical expression occurring at the intersection of contemporary music composition, instrumental/vocal performance, and technology.

EMuSE builds on the strong tradition of the studio as a creative space in which technology empowers new paths of expression for compositional and performative imagination.

Please join us for our final EMuSE concert of the season, taking place on Monday, April 14 at 7:30 PM in Hatch Recital Hall. This event features guest composer Andrew Lewis (Bangor, Wales), with a world premiere performance of Soundings for antiphonal brass and fixed media by the Eastman Brass Guild, conducted by Mark Kellogg.

The program also includes works by Kaija Saariaho, Federico Schumacher Ratti, and Ko Muramatsu, presented on a 7.10.1 surround sound array.

Guest Information:

Andrew Lewis studied composition with Jonty Harrison at the University of Birmingham, England. He was one of the original members of BEAST, performing with them throughout the 1980s and early 1990s. His music is concerned with the materiality of sound, and often uses technology in its realisation and performance. He has been commissioned and performed by artists including the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, L’Opéra orchestre national de Montpellier, the Kreutzer Quartet, Psappha and Uproar. Several recordings are available, including two collections of his works, Miroirs obscurs and Au-dèla (empreintes DIGITALes), and Schattenklavier on Shadow Piano (Innova). Awards include a Bourges ‘Euphonie d’Or’, PRS Prize, Stockholm Electronic Arts, Noroit (France), HEAR (Hungary), ARTS XXI (Spain), CIMESP (Brazil), Destellos (Argentina) and the Prix CIME. Andrew Lewis lives in Bangor, North Wales, where he is Professor of Composition at Bangor University and directs the work of the Electroacoustic Music Studios. He is married with four grown-up daughters.

Please join us this Thursday in Hatch Recital hall for our next concert featuring guest composer Ludger Brümmer, former music director of ZKM's Hertz Lab!

This concert is free, open to the public, and will be diffused onto a 7.10.1 array (7 loudspeakers in the upper balcony, 10 on the lower level and a sub woofer)

There will also be an open lecture by Ludger Brümmer on Friday, March 7, at 1:30pm in Howard Hanson Hall, Eastman School of Music.

About Ludger Brümmer:
Ludger Brümmer is currently Professor for Composition with Digital Media and directs the music programme of the Hertz Lab at the ZKM Karlsruhe. He studied composition (artistic maturity) at the Folkwang Hochschule Essen and was Visiting Scholar at the Centre for Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA) at Stanford University, USA from 1991-1993. In 2000 he has been a Research Fellow at Kingston University London, and in 2002 Professor of Composition at the Sonic Arts Research Centre, Belfast (SARC). Since 2003 he became Director of the Institute for Music and Acoustics, now the Hertz Lab, at the ZKM | Centre for Art and Media and Visiting Professor at the University of Arts and Design Karlsruhe.In 2009 he was appointed to the Academy of the Arts in Berlin and in 2017 he became a professor at the State University for Music Trossingen.

Prizes and awards as a composer include the "Busoni-Preis" of the Akademie der Künste Berlin, the "Golden Nica" of the Prix Ars Electronica, the "Pierre d'Or" in 1997 and 2001 at the "Concours International de Musique Elecroacoustique" Bourges, the Larry Austin Prize of the ICMA San Francisco and Honorary Mentions at the "Russolo Competition" and the "Musica Sacrae" Fribourg. He was awarded the Honorary Prize of the German Music Critics in 2024.

He has created works for fixed media, multimedia, interdisciplinary projects, as well as works for dance, live electronics and live video. The opera project Amazonas was performed at the Munich Biennale and in Sao Paulo in 2010. Collaborations with the light artist rosalie include Lichtblick Bad Rodenfelden, with Susanne Linke for the Ruhrort dance project and with Bernd Lintermann for the Spin project. His recent double CD set "Sonic Pattern" and "Spheres of Resonance" was included in the German Music Critics' List of the Best Releases of 2023.

Please welcome our new EMuSE teaching assistan Matthew Lam!

Born and raised in Hong Kong, Matthew Lam is an active composer and an enthusiast of contemporary music style. His goal is to explore and experiment on a wide array of sounds and timbre, especially with contemporary instrumental techniques and live electronics. Winning multiple awards, his works were featured in numerous festivals and conferences, including June in Buffalo (USA), International Rostrum of Composers (2023: Netherlands), MUSLAB (2023: Ecuador), soundSCAPE Festival (Italy), Connecticut Summerfest (USA), SCI National Conference (USA). Groups such as the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, Toledo Symphony, Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, Hong Kong New Music Ensemble, Mivos Quartet, Del Sol Quartet, and [Switch~ Ensemble] are among the many who have presented Lam’s music over the years. Lam earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and Bowling Green State University respectively. He is currently pursuing his doctoral studies at Eastman School of Music with Dr. Elizabeth Ogonek.

Anak Baiharn is a composer with a fascination for a diverse array of musical styles. His creative passions encompass electronic music, jazz, spectralism, rock, and post-minimalism. He has participated and has been selected to work with various ensembles, festivals, and organizations such as Arditti Quartet, Bang On a Can, Elizabeth and Justus Schlichting, OSSIA New Music, June in Buffalo, Florida State University Symphony Orchestra,TACETi Ensemble, IntAct, Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra, Thailand Techno Orchestra, Borneo Ensemble, Triphens (---) Ensemble, and Wind Band Association of Singapore. Anak is currently pursuing a Master of Arts in Composition at Eastman School of Music, studying composition with Evis Sammoutis.

The EMuSE 2024 season kicks off with guest composer Kotoka Suzuki! Join us Thursday, September 26th at 7:30pm in Hatch Recital Hall to hear works by Ana Dall’Ara-Majek, Kotoka Suzuki, Jonathan Harvey, and more.

About Kotoka Suzuki:
Kotoka Suzuki / 鈴木琴香 is a composer focusing on both
multimedia and instrumental practices. She has produced several
large-scale multimedia works, including spatial interactive audio-
visual work for both concert and installation settings, often in
collaboration with artists and scholars from other disciplines.
Her work engages deeply in the visual, conceiving of sound as a
physical form to be manipulated through the sculptural practice of
composition. Her work often reflects on life, breath and wind.

Please join us Thursday, November 2nd at 7:30 PM for our second main series concert with EMuSE! Our guest composer will be Jon Christopher Nelson, Professor of Composition and Coordinator of the Music Electronics Curriculum at University of North Texas. We are also very happy to welcome back Eastman alum and violinist Shannon Reilly!

The program will feature the music of Mario Davidovsky, Elsa Justel, Mikel Kuehn, Robert Morris, Jon Christopher Nelson, and Hildegard Westerkamp. We look forward to seeing you there, and as always, the concert will be live-streamed through the Eastman website.
