I’ve been a fan and patron of the Shaw Festival in Niagara-on-the-Lake for nearly 30 years. It’s a jewel and, here in Rochester, we’re lucky to be only 90 minutes away from some incredible theatre.

The current season is in full swing and offers something for everyone: suspenseful drama, hilarious comedy, classic musicals, and one of G. B. Shaw’s greatest plays.

Funny Girl, now on the Festival Theatre stage through October 3rd, has audiences leaping to their feet, and rightly so.

Most people don’t know the comedic genius of F***y Brice, but that is not a prerequisite to enjoying Funny Girl. At its heart is a story of a woman balancing personal ambition, self-worth, and the desire to be loved. It portrays the bittersweet reality that personal fulfillment and romantic fulfillment don't always coincide, and that remaining true to yourself may come with both triumph and loss.

Many actresses use the role of F***y to display vocal fireworks and ‘wow’ the audience with sheer power. Sara Farb as F***y is more nuanced. She possesses the comedic timing and charisma required of the role, along with the ability to play F***y from awkward young performer to mature star. But she brings an authenticity to the role that others to date have not, and I truly appreciated that.
For example, in the show-stopping number “Don’t Rain on My Parade,” I felt that instead of trying to declare her ambition to those around her, it was more about F***y convincing herself that she was worthy of the life that awaited her. It’s a marathon of a role as F***y is on stage most of the time, and we are a fly on the wall for her journey. Farb brings it.

It is F***y’s story and she really is “the greatest star” of this show, but not without a superb supporting cast including Qasim Khan as Nick Arnstein, Matt Alfano as Eddie Ryan, Cheryl Mullings as Mrs. Brice. As always, the production values at The Shaw are very high and sets and costumes are exquisite.

At times, I felt the orchestra overpowered the cast a bit, which made it hard to hear every word, but overall, it’s a very tight production and one well worth seeing.
