What a beautiful night. 🖤✨

Our very first Soft Black Joy: An R&B Karaoke Social reminded us exactly why we wanted to create this space in the first place.

There were incredible voices, plenty of laughs, new friendships, familiar faces, dancing, yummy bites, and a room full of people who simply showed up as themselves. That’s the kind of joy we hope to keep cultivating.

To everyone who came out, sang a song, cheered someone on, volunteered, or simply shared the space with us—thank you. You helped make our first event something truly special.

I wrote this for every woman who’s ever wondered if what she does matters.

Legacy isn’t always loud. Sometimes it’s survival. Sometimes it’s caregiving. Sometimes it’s simply showing up day after day when nobody sees the effort. 🫶🏾

Long before women could vote, own property independently, open bank accounts without a husband, or safely speak their minds in public spaces, they were still shaping economies, preserving culture, and holding communities together. ✨ A little vulnerability…

The last few months have been a whirlwind. Between moving, family responsibilities, work, grief, and trying to find my footing in a new city, I’ve spent a lot of time focused on simply making it through each day.

One thing I’ve realized is that building community doesn’t just happen. Sometimes we have to create the spaces we’re hoping to find.

That’s why I’m so excited to invite you to Unapologetically Anxious Me’s very first community event here in Rochester. I’lLanau Cicerony my husband, Lanau Ciceron aka DJ Shando, who’ll be co-hosting the evening and helping create a fun, welcoming space where everyone can sing, dance, connect, and simply enjoy themselves.

Now, before anyone asks…

R&B is our theme, not a rule.

Yes, we’ll absolutely be singing the songs that raised us, healed us, got us through heartbreak, and kept us dancing in our bedrooms. But if your heart says Whitney Houston, go for it. If your soul says Paramore, sing it. If you’ve got a Kelly Clarkson anthem living rent-free in your head, the mic is yours.

This is about joy, connection, nostalgia, music, and community—not staying inside a genre box.

And for the record, my shower concerts have featured everything from Mary J. Blige to Celine Dion to random 2000s millennial anthems with full emotional commitment and production value. 😂

Whether you grab the mic or just come to vibe, I’d love to meet some of the amazing people who make Rochester home.

Having to console my Earth Day baby multiple times this week due to the tree trimming and cutting at a house at the end of our street has got to be the peak parenting experience I’ve had this year 🤣🤦🏾‍♀️ The way she’s been monitoring the growing pile every morning and shedding actual tears is both adorable and wild. I still struggle walking on wet grass 😂 She speaks for the trees 🤣🌳
