🚨 UPDATE FROM ROCHESTER FIRE – PICKERING RD FIREWORKS INCIDENT 🚨

On the evening of July 5, 2025, Rochester Fire Department responded to a grass fire and fireworks incident at 264 Pickering Road.

Crews were dispatched at 9:17 PM and arrived to find a 50’x50’ area of grass burning after a pyrotechnic device tipped over, igniting nearby fireworks stored under a canopy. Due to the ongoing explosions, firefighters had to wait until it was safe to begin suppression efforts. A tent covering the fireworks also burned.

For public safety, the surrounding area was evacuated, and Rochester Police Department managed traffic congestion. The fire was declared under control at 10:41 PM. Fortunately, no injuries were reported to civilians or emergency personnel.

After extinguishing the blaze, Fire Marshal Hughes and Captain Pageau decided the remaining fireworks would be discharged under controlled conditions to prevent further risk. This was completed successfully with no additional incidents.

A fireworks permit had been issued for July 4th, but the applicant misunderstood the rain date policy in City Ordinance 75-16, which contributed to the mishap. The fire is classified as accidental, with damages estimated under $5,000.

📢 REMINDER: Fireworks in the City of Rochester are only allowed on July 3rd or 4th with an approved permit. Permit applications and ordinance details can be found on the city website under Building and Licensing > Chapter 75, Article II, Section 75-16.
