The next World Junior Championship will be held in the Twin Cities, this Dec. 26-Jan. 5. Rochester has been selected as one of four pre-tournament host sites, where teams will practice and play exhibition games for 10 days in advance of the WJC.

The best young hockey players in the world are coming to Minnesota, and Rochester will play a part in it. The city will be a pre-tournament host for two World Junior Championship hockey teams.

When Justin Sutton was in youth hockey, a coach told him he could make himself more valuable throughout his career by learning to play more than one position.
That has paid off for Sutton and the Century/John Marshall boys hockey team — and that same coach — this year. Sutton’s versatility is a big reason why the Panthers will play in the Class AA state tournament, beginning Thursday at the Xcel Energy Center.

During his youth hockey days, Justin Sutton learned to play whatever position was asked of him. That's paid off this year, as he's shuffled between defense and forward for state-bound Century/JM.

A record-setting season for the Dodge County girls hockey team came to a close in the Class A state championship game on Saturday. The Wildcats have the talent to be right back there next season.

The Class 1A girls hockey state championship game didn't go the way Dodge County envisioned it going. But an outstanding group of underclassmen will soon get to work on returning to state next year.

Justin Phelps is one of my favorite — and for sure the hardest working — hockey players I’ve covered in my 18 years here. He passed away last year at age 32. His dad thought, what better way to honor him than to get his old teammates together for the Return of the Robin tournament this weekend. Those guys were all-in, even if they hadn’t put the pads on for a few years:

Rochester native Mark Stuart is headed back to the NHL, this time as a coach. Stuart was named an assistant coach with the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday, after spending last season as an assistant at his alma mater, Colorado College.

Mark Stuart continues to climb the coaching ladder in the hockey world. The Rochester native retired from his playing career four years ago, and spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach at the Division I college level. Now, he'll join the NHL's Edmonton Oliers as their new assistant coach.

Saturday’s Pro Motocross races at Spring Creek MX Park in Millville were a giant thank-you card brought to life.
Hometown favorite Alex Martin, who is retiring at the end of this season, rode on his home track for what is likely his final time as a pro. Though five races remain in the season, the crowd of 20,000 and Martin’s fellow riders sent him out on a high note.

Rochester Grizzlies assistant coach Mike Aikens is heading north and moving back up in the coaching world. He was named the first head coach of the new NAHL franchise in Anchorage, Alaska, tonight.

Mike Aikens helped build his hometown Rochester Grizzlies into a national championship contender in just three seasons. Now he'll try to do the same thing in the North American Hockey League, as head coach of the expansion Anchorage Wolverines.
