On Dec. 12, 1983, Jann Armantrout, who was 29 at the time, donated a kidney to her then-27-year-old brother, Mark Armantrout. The two are pictured together here in 1988.

The Catholic Church has long viewed organ donation as a positive and charitable act — so long as the process of organ removal does not hasten the donor’s death, Armantrout noted.

For Catholics wondering more about the ethics of organ donation, there are a variety of resources to guide prospective donors. Learn more about these resources here: https://catholiccourier.com/articles/catholic-resources-guide-prospective-organ-donors/
