Catholics across the Diocese of Rochester are encouraged to join in events noting the upcoming National Prayer Vigil for Life and March for Life. A Holy Hour for Life is set for Jan. 20 at Schuyler Catholic Community - St. Mary's of the Lake and St. Benedict's (St. Mary of the Lake Church in Watkins Glen), while Masses will be held at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Rochester and Immaculate Conception Church in Ithaca on Jan. 22. Spaces are still available for the bus pilgrimage, leaving the night of Jan. 22 for Washington, D.C.

Bishop John S. Bonnici greeted daily Mass-goers at Sacred Heart Cathedral on Jan. 7, just hours after being announced as bishop-designate of the Diocese of Rochester. Local Catholics were “thoroughly overjoyed” to hear Bishop Bonnici had been appointed to be their shepherd, Bishop Matano said before Mass began.

BREAKING NEWS: This morning, January 7, 2026, the Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV, accepted the resignation of The Most Reverend Salvatore R. Matano from the pastoral governance of the Diocese of Rochester and has appointed The Most Reverend John S. Bonnici as the next Bishop of Rochester.
