Becoming an adoptive parent had a couple of lasting effects on Joan Rohr, a parishioner of StLeo Hilton.

One of these effects was that in 1980, Rohr began volunteering with Birthright of Rochester Inc., which provides goods and services for women both during and after pregnancy. Her commitment continues to this day — some 45 years later — including the past 34 as the agency’s executive director.

As her 80th birthday approaches Dec. 6, Rohr remains steadfast in her calling.

And they’re off!

Teens from the Diocese of Rochester gathered at St. Marianne Cope Parish in Henrietta Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 19, to board two chartered buses to the National Catholic Youth Conference, taking place this week at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Ind. The teens were seen off with prayer, waves and plenty of snacks for the road.

During the NCYC event, Pope Leo XIV will engage in a live, 45-minute dialogue via video link with the expected crowd of about 15,000 young people ages 14-18 from around the country. The event marks the first time in history a pope has been a part of such an encounter with American young people. The Friday, Nov. 21 event will be simulcast on EWTN.

The delegation of 146 teens and chaperones from the Diocese of Rochester represents the parishes of Holy Cross and Our Mother of Sorrows, Charlotte/Greece; Holy Trinity, Webster; Immaculate Conception, Ithaca; Parish of the Holy Family Gates; St. Agnes, St. Rose and St. Paul of the Cross, Avon/Lima/Honeoye Falls; St. John of Rochester, Fairport; St. John Vianney, Bath; St. Joseph, Penfield; St. Martin de Porres, Churchville/Caledonia/Scottsville; St. Maximilian Kolbe, Ontario; St. Monica, Rochester; St. Pius Tenth, Chili; and Church of the Transfiguration/St. Catherine of Siena, Pittsford/Mendon.
