Tip of the morning...

You can encourage, you can guide, you can even request, but in the end, life experience will do the teaching.

I highly suggested that he not start wearing shorts. I requested he not open the shorts bin yet, I explained Spring has not sprung, he choose life experience.

Mother nature had my back and gave me one more 16 degree morning.

I suggested, before opening the kitchen door at 7am, that he grab some warmer clothes. He responded with "Mom, its soooo nice out. Ill be fine." I said "sounds good" 🤭😆

Julie and Aunt Glorie's pasture needed a little Spring maintenence. Billy did a great job taking his time and operating the york rake. Although we are always happy to see horses using their brains and calmly accessing situations, sometimes, it would be most helpful, if they were just a little intimated by farm equipment and could atleast be bothered to move out of the way 🤣

Fuego, also know as Fabio for his crazy amazing hair, is quite the ladies man. He doesn't actually take down fences but he has caused a few mare squabbles that certainly resulted in some dramatic breakouts.

It's terrible he has actually "kiss chewed" the hair off her nose. 🤦‍♀️

She progressed through step one fairly quickly.

I'm still figuering out how to tape all of this solo and I somehow cut the video where she nicely put her head in the collar but we will circle back to that again.

We now have the collar on and as you can see she just doesn't care. The main event is really getting the collars on and off quietly. It really takes the fun out of driving and working your horse if it takes three people and a wall to put the collar and bridle on. These two pieces seem to require substantially more time then the rest of the harnessing process but its so worth it in the end.

This collar is huge on her but the size that would fit her neck without a pad does not fit her head. In the begining I don't care if the collar fits her neck because she isn't going to be worked in it and I want her to have plenty of eyeball clearance as she puts her head in.

Next up... do you guys want to see taking collars back off or bridle work?

Nap time, please don't call and tell me they are dead.

Last year I put the whole herd in the front pasture and someone called to tell me, "your horses were all standing to close together and when the lighting storm went through they were hit and I'm so sorry to tell you they all died." She was hysterical and I felt bad when I laughed. They all layed down to nap side by side.

We just have a sleepy bunch of happy ponies, what can I say. 🤷‍♀️

Julie started getting acclimated to her collar today.

There is a ton of different ways to do this and if you ask 12 people you will probably get 12 different ways. You can "cut" the collars so they open and the horse never puts their head through. You can start with a pad already attached to the collar. You could start with a breastplate style harness and skip this all together.

We use collars so thats what she needs to be accustomed to. I do have some cut collars but there are many more applications where you use a collar that can't be opened so I like to teach them to put their heads through.

The first step isn't to "just get it on". The first step is to get her interested. Curiosity is our friend. I want to see her stepping forward to the collar not backing away and thats all I'm hoping for during the first session. Having her nose in and on the collar and having her curious not stressed.

A one year old draft hoof and six year old vicking warrior hand are the same size. Coincidence, I think not. Tommy is actually very sweet but he does have a knack for taking on characters long since passed 😅
