CAREGIVERS — HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT MEDICARE’S GUIDE PROGRAM?
I recently learned more about a Medicare program that I think families caring for someone with dementia need to know about.
It’s called GUIDE — Guiding an Improved Dementia Experience.
GUIDE is designed not only to help the person living with dementia, but also to provide support for the family or unpaid caregiver.
Depending on eligibility, GUIDE can provide things like:
- A care navigator to help coordinate dementia care
- Caregiver education, training and support
- 24/7 access to a support line
- Help connecting families with community resources
- A personalized dementia care plan
- And for qualifying families, respite services of up to $2,500 per year Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services
That last one caught my attention.
The respite benefit is not $2,500 cash paid to the caregiver. It is respite care arranged through a participating GUIDE organization and may include in-home respite, adult day services or facility-based respite. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services
There are eligibility requirements. Among them, the person with dementia generally must have Original Medicare Parts A and B, rather than Medicare Advantage, and meet the other GUIDE requirements. There are also special rules for people living in assisted living/residential care communities, and as of July 2026, people living in a memory-care unit are not eligible for GUIDE. I want Taking Care of Granny to continue finding programs like this and putting them in plain English so caregivers know what resources may be available to them.
