⚠️ WINTER STORM POTENTIAL ⚠️

🗓️ WHEN: Friday night into Saturday
📍 WHERE: Entire Quad Cities Area
❄️ WHAT: Heavy snowfall

👉 We are closely monitoring the potential for a winter storm bringing significant snowfall to Iowa and northern Illinois, of which would greatly hinder holiday travel. Primary hazard will be heavy snow with widespread totals up to 6" or more possible. Confidence in timing, placement and overall intensity of snowfall will increase in the coming days.

The latest hi-res guidance is showing a persistent lake effect snowband setting up over parts of Chicago Sunday night into Monday, producing a foot or more of snow in parts of the city. Where these snowbands set up, 12-18 inches of snow is possible from near Chicago to northwest Indiana❄️🌨️❄️🌨️

A Very Weak Stratospheric Polar Vortex is Forecast during September

In fact, we may be looking at a record weak stratospheric polar vortex forecast for early September, which is unusual as the vortex typically strengthens at this point in the season.

A weak Stratospheric Polar Vortex could disrupt the jet stream, making it more wavy. This may lead to early cold outbreaks in parts of North America, Europe, and Asia, with increased risks of storms or heavy precipitation over the next few weeks.

This sentiment is echoed by the CFS model's forecasting of relentless cold fronts dumping into the Eastern US through mid-September. (see previous post).

114 years ago yesterday, my all-time favorite photograph of a tornado was taken from Antler, North Dakota. On August 20th, 1911 this tornado, postmortemly rated F4, did damage just outside the town of Antler, moving up towards the Canadian border.

The church in this photo still stands today.
