Chapter 20 — The Nine-Tails and the Broken Trust
The village of Konohagakure was quieter now—but not in the way peace was supposed to feel.
There was no chaos in the streets anymore.
No fractured orders.
No ROOT interference bleeding through every conversation.
Just… people adjusting.
And in that adjustment, something subtle formed around Naruto Uzumaki.
Distance.
Not hostility.
Not fear.
Just uncertainty.
Like the village wasn’t sure what to do with the boy who helped expose the truth but now questioned what came after it.
Naruto noticed it immediately.
Whispers that stopped when he passed.
Eyes that lingered too long, then looked away.
Even shinobi who had once nodded at him now seemed unsure how to greet him.
He stood outside a rebuilt district wall, hands in his pockets.
“…So this is what ‘fixed’ feels like?”
Behind him—
Sasuke Uchiha approached silently.
“You’re overthinking it.”
Naruto glanced back.
“I’m not.”
A pause.
“I just don’t fit anywhere right now.”
Sasuke didn’t deny it.
Instead—
“It’s because you’re in between systems.”
Naruto frowned.
“That’s not comforting.”
A second presence arrived.
Calm footsteps.
Measured breathing.
Itachi Uchiha.
“I heard what you said during the council stabilization,” he said quietly.
Naruto looked away slightly.
“…Yeah.”
Itachi observed him.
“You’re not rejecting the village.”
Naruto hesitated.
“I don’t know what I’m doing.”
A pause.
“I just don’t trust it yet.”
Itachi nodded once.
“That is reasonable.”
Naruto blinked.
“…Huh?”
Sasuke glanced at Itachi.
“You’re not going to argue with him?”
Itachi replied calmly.
“Trust must be rebuilt, not demanded.”
Silence settled.
Then Naruto spoke quietly.
“I feel like I’m outside everything now.”
A pause.
“And the more I try to understand it… the more I realize I don’t understand what I am either.”
That hit differently.
Even Sasuke didn’t interrupt.
Itachi turned slightly.
“There is something you should see.”
Naruto blinked.
“What?”
Sasuke straightened slightly.
Itachi’s expression remained calm.
“The reason the system-jutsu reacted to you so strongly.”
A pause.
“And why Danzo could never fully classify you.”
They descended again.
But this time it wasn’t secrecy.
It was guidance.
Deep beneath the village, older than ROOT infrastructure, sealed before modern governance—
a forgotten archive opened under Itachi’s key.
Naruto looked around.
“…This place feels ancient.”
Sasuke nodded slightly.
“It is.”
Itachi stepped forward and activated a seal.
Chakra illuminated the walls.
Scrolls and stone tablets emerged from hidden compartments.
Not war records.
Not political files.
Something older.
Naruto stepped closer.
“What is all this?”
Itachi answered quietly.
“Information on the Nine-Tails.”
That made Naruto freeze.
“…What?”
Sasuke looked at him.
“You were never given full understanding of it.”
Naruto frowned.
“Yeah, I kind of noticed that part already.”
Itachi began reading.
“The Nine-Tailed Beast—Kurama—is not just a sealed entity.”
A pause.
“It is a chakra intelligence system.”
Naruto blinked.
“…A what?”
Sasuke narrowed his eyes.
“A thinking chakra structure?”
Itachi nodded.
“Highly emotional resonance-based intelligence. It responds to fear, anger, and intent.”
Naruto looked down.
“So… it gets stronger when I’m emotional?”
Itachi corrected.
“It becomes more active when your emotional output destabilizes your chakra balance.”
A pause.
“Which can be either destructive… or adaptive.”
Naruto clenched his fists slightly.
“So I’ve just been… barely controlling something like that my whole life?”
Sasuke replied quietly.
“Yes.”
A pause.
“And poorly trained.”
Naruto shot him a look.
“Hey!”
Sasuke didn’t flinch.
“It’s true.”
Itachi continued.
“There are documented methods of partial synchronization.”
Naruto blinked.
“…Synchronization?”
Itachi nodded.
“Not suppression.”
A pause.
“Coexistence.”
Silence.
That word hit differently.
Sasuke stepped forward.
“And control methods?”
Itachi turned a page of the archive scroll.
“Yes.”
A pause.
“But most require emotional alignment rather than force.”
Naruto frowned.
“So I don’t punch it into submission?”
Sasuke exhaled slightly.
“That sounds like something you would try.”
Naruto muttered.
“It has worked before…”
Itachi finally looked at him directly.
“Naruto.”
Naruto paused.
“…Yeah?”
“You are not incompatible with it.”
A silence followed.
“You are untrained in negotiation with it.”
That shifted something in Naruto’s expression.
“…Negotiation?”
Itachi nodded.
“The Nine-Tails does not respond to control alone.”
A pause.
“It responds to recognition.”
Sasuke added quietly.
“So it’s not just a weapon inside you.”
Naruto looked down.
“…It’s something I’ve been ignoring.”
A long silence settled in the archive.
Then Naruto spoke softly.
“So if I learn this… I can actually use it without losing myself?”
Itachi answered carefully.
“Yes.”
A pause.
“If done correctly.”
Sasuke crossed his arms.
“And if not?”
Itachi didn’t sugarcoat it.
“Then it uses you instead.”
Naruto exhaled slowly.
“…Great.”
Then he looked up slightly.
“But I still want to try.”
That surprised even Sasuke a little.
“…Why?”
Naruto hesitated.
“I don’t want to keep being scared of what’s inside me.”
A pause.
“I want to understand it.”
Itachi closed the scroll gently.
“Then training is possible.”
Naruto blinked.
“…Training?”
Itachi nodded.
“Yes.”
A pause.
“But not here.”
Sasuke narrowed his eyes.
“Where then?”
Itachi looked toward the deeper seal markings in the archive.
“A controlled environment where the Nine-Tails’ chakra can manifest safely.”
Naruto’s eyes widened slightly.
“…You have a place like that?”
Itachi nodded once.
“Yes.”
A pause.
“And someone who understands its structure better than anyone in Konoha currently alive.”
Naruto looked between them.
“…You’re serious?”
Sasuke answered.
“Yes.”
A pause.
“We start soon.”
Naruto stood there for a moment.
Not excited.
Not relieved.
Just… uncertain in a different way.
But this uncertainty didn’t feel like isolation.
It felt like direction.
Above them, the village continued rebuilding trust in pieces.
But below—
something new was forming.
Not a weapon.
Not a political shift.
But a different kind of bond.
Between Naruto…
the Uchiha…
and the thing inside him that no longer needed to stay a mystery.
