Thanks Brooks Garner

STATE OF EMERGENCY ISSUED FOR FLORIDA

Cause: Severe drought, active wildfires with growing fire threat, and agricultural impacts following the recent hard freeze.

Over the past couple of weeks, Florida has dealt with record cold, worsening drought, and increasing wildfire activity. This declaration is intended to cut through red tape and allow resources to be deployed faster.

Most of us will not see a difference in our day to day lives. That’s the point.

It allows the state to get ahead of a worsening problem instead of reacting late.

WHAT CAN HAPPEN NOW:

Trucks can haul crops longer hours.

Weight limits can be adjusted.

Money can be shifted immediately to wildfire response.

Certain rules can be temporarily paused.

Florida can request help from other states faster.

Federal aid becomes easier to access.

When you see “state of emergency,” it’s not about fear.

It’s about speed.

There is a lot of misunderstanding around that phrase. This is about logistics and flexibility, not panic.

Let’s hope for some good rain and a pattern change to give farmers relief and knock those fires down.

We spent the morning connecting with an incredible group of engaged citizens who are committed to learning more about our city and police department. Chief Collier, our commanders, and officers from the Community Engagement Unit welcomed them with an interactive question-and-answer session, followed by a behind-the-scenes tour of the department.

The visit also featured a highlight from our K-9 Unit, where K9 Kyra and Officer Delos Santos demonstrated how teamwork and training come together to locate illegal drugs and apprehend suspects.

Our community members came prepared with thoughtful questions and a genuine interest in understanding how public safety works. Opportunities like these strengthen trust, transparency, and partnership between the police department and the community we serve. We value educating and engaging with our residents as we work together to protect and serve.

Great group of kids with plenty of tough questions and interesting insight! Thanks for coming to see us!

CPD traffic officers are investigating a hit-and-run crash that occurred just after 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Michigan Avenue and University Lane.
Investigators say the driver of a silver/gray Honda SUV—believed to be a Honda Pilot or Honda CR-V—failed to stop at the stop sign and struck two juveniles riding an e-bike. The victims, ages 16 and 17, suffered minor injuries.
The driver of the at-fault vehicle is described as a Black male with a thick beard. The vehicle is expected to have damage to the front passenger side, specifically the front fender.
Anyone with information is urged to contact the Cocoa Police Department and reference case number 2026-3237. Tips may also be submitted via text or email through [email protected].
