Cousin Jacks in the Wild West: The Historical and Cultural Impact of the Cornish in the American West. Presented by Gary Noy

When: Thursday, July 16th at 7:00 PM

Where: Nevada County Historical Society Speaker Night at The Sierra Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall, located at 175 Ridge Road, Nevada City.

Admission: FREE and open to the public, this event lasts one hour. Free refreshments offered after the presentation.

Gary’s presentation will recount the story of the Cornish influence in the American West, a subject of particular importance in Nevada County. Gary Noy is a Grass Valley native. He is of Cornish heritage, and his father and grandfather were Cornish hard rock gold miners in mines in Montana, South Dakota, and the Grass Valley/Nevada City area. The presentation will highlight some Noy family history, famous Cornish and Cornish descendants throughout history, and the Cornish diaspora throughout the world, with a special emphasis on the impact of the Cornish throughout the American West.

A Grass Valley native, Gary Noy has taught at Sierra Community College in Rocklin, California, from 1987 to the present. He is a graduate of UC Berkeley and CSU Sacramento. In 2006, the Oregon-California Trails Association (OCTA), a national historical society, selected Gary as “Educator of the Year.” In 2016, Gary’s book Sierra Stories received the prestigious national Gold Medal for Best Regional Nonfiction from the Next Generation Indie Book Awards.
