My dog sleeping in his dusky corner
Of a room so bare and familiar
I no longer see but feel its comfort
curtain me from
This afternoon heat
Circling down
So birds feel too heavy to fly

The day is reaching to complete itself
As the sun moves past its apex
But not me-restless and upset
Looking for a nap to reset
To find a moment of pause
Hoping that the cool dark air
Will be enough

But the earth finds its own
Way to complete our sentences
While we stutter and stumble forward
Through darkness and sleep
Before we can wake again deep into our
incomplete lives

The shine on your wooden ships
And bankers’ doors
The polish on your shiny floors
Was made by people

Exhausted by daylight
We fell to our beds

Sad, exhausted our energy bled

Bread, water and rest
We cared nothing for our dress
