We continue to "Show Out" for , celebrating the creative employees who live their LGBTQ+ identities out loud.
Meet Executive Producer and Pod Leader Dusty Heinzmann.
For as long as I can remember I’ve dreamed of getting married and having a family. I longed for a traditional wedding – even though I knew it would be different. The different part being that I would marry a man. At times I worried this would never be possible, but in the summer of 2015 same-sex marriage was legalized in the U.S.
Serendipitously that year I met the man of my dreams. We celebrated a beautiful sunset coastal wedding in Costa Rica with family and friends and two years later we began to grow our family. We welcomed our first son in 2020 and our second son in 2022. Every day is an exciting adventure. My family is my “why” for everything.
We are blessed beyond measure to have such an amazing support system -- one that includes VIVA, a company that unconditionally values a family first environment.
It’s month and we are continuing our celebration of VIVA employees who live their LGBTQ+ identities out loud.
Meet Jessica Grey, Manager, Finance & Operations.
Always in a hurry to grow up, I’ve immersed myself in fast paced environments. As a kid this meant staying busy with extracurriculars. As a young adult it meant working in the organized chaos of a high-profile kitchen. With exceedingly high expectations, I fell in love with the hustle of the hospitality industry -- and found other things to love as well: my wife.
Our world, which largely revolved around restaurant responsibilities, was like a well-choreographed dance that revealed extraordinary beauty. That’s what it was like working side by side with Charisse for 6 years. As different as we are, we balanced each other with tremendous grace. Getting married was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Finally, I had actually grown up. It also slowed me down.
A few months later I found myself at VIVA Creative. With the same drive for quality and excellence that permeated my professional path in hospitality, VIVA provided a familial and inclusive culture where creativity had no bounds. Our work has many of the elements of a high-functioning synchronized kitchen, but also the balance that I experience at home. At VIVA I am not in a rush, and I know I have the trust and support I need to achieve the expectations I set for myself long ago.
We are excited to support The New York Times DealBook/DC Policy Forum, where top leaders debate the nation’s biggest policy challenges. You can watch it live-streamed here: https://www.nytimes.com/live/2022/06/09/business/inflation-starbucks-guns-dealbook
Our is on display this month as we continue to celebrate the creative employees who live their LGBTQ+ identities out loud.
Meet Creative Strategist Josh Tjaden
I learned the meaning of “conscientious” at a very young age when, upon taking my kindergarten report card home, my teacher remarked on my willing participation in class and general stick-to-itiveness. It was welcome praise, and I’ve worn it as a badge of honor ever since. But there was another comment that I didn’t quite understand. Why was being “overly sensitive” something I needed to improve upon?
Unfortunately, that early and accurate assessment of two fundamental aspects of my personality was a precursor to a years-long struggle with my identity as a q***r man. What started as a general sense of not belonging led to a full understanding of my sexual identity and worldview. During that time I also learned that by being more attuned to the struggles and realities of others’ I was able to find purpose, through using my voice and skillset in the service of social causes.
Prior to joining VIVA, I spent much of my 20s and 30s in the nonprofit sector working to fight HIV/AIDS, help in the repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”, and advance legislation to achieve full equality for LGBTQ+ people. Through this work I found purpose and formed a chosen family of like-minded people from around the world, all committed to making the world a better place for each of us - no matter our background or beliefs. And the work continues through my involvement in the gun violence prevention movement with G**s Against Guns and other volunteer, grassroots activism.
We’re living in a time when we desperately need to find common ground, and empathy sadly seems to be in short supply. I steadfastly believe the most effective way to find that common ground is through clear communication and by being purposeful and persistent. The world may have changed in countless ways, but that conscientious, “overly-sensitive” 5-year-old boy is still looking for ways to make it just a little bit better.
This month, we are "Showing Out" for , celebrating the creative employees who live their LGBTQ+ identities out loud.
Meet Senior Graphics Designer Vlad Sarkisov
I was just 5 years old when I had my first solo art show in kindergarten. I remember it like it was yesterday. My parents and teachers were so proud. I knew – even then – that I was an artist. The year was 1982 and the events that led up to the Nagorno-Karabakh War in my home country of Azerbaijan were in full swing. As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, living there today would be a death sentence.
As a child I was always creating. I spent hours sitting among the Mulberry Trees in my grandmother’s backyard, or in my mother’s office, writing, sculpting, and drawing. One of my works, a screenplay written on a manual typewriter, became legendary in elementary school thanks to my after school counselor, Julia. She pushed teams of kids to make costumes and design sets to enact the fictional world I’d invented. I realized that my creativity could inspire others to be a part of something bigger.
After immigrating to the States in 1997, I eventually joined a Russian speaking LGBTQ+ group in New York. We marched in the NYC Pride Parade and put together a live event to commemorate and celebrate Pride. There was no budget, so everyone contributed what they could: social activists, musical performers, comedians and many others brought their talents, which made for an amazing event. I contributed by creating posters, banners, flyers and all the imagery that demonstrated our impact that year -- another moment to mark the power of community.
At VIVA I use my experience to power teams of creative people – just as I did in my younger years. I’ve realized that my creativity largely stems from having experienced this world as a member of LGBTQ+ community, and I apply that daily to my work, by thinking outside the box and helping develop new ways to tell stories and inspire people to transform communities.
