This standard predates Motown by two decades - Russ Morgan, Larry Stock, and James Cavanaugh wrote it in 1944, and Dean Martin's 1960 version is the one most people know. The Supremes performed it live multiple times across their career, including on "Hullabaloo" in 1965 and again on "The Ed Sullivan Show" in 1969, treating it as a jazz-standard showcase rather than one of their own pop hits. It never got a proper studio release under the group - the only recordings that exist are these live television performances, decades before a studio take finally surfaced on a 2004 unreleased-material compilation.

This song bounced around before it found Gladys Knight. Writers Gloria Jones and Pam Sawyer first pitched it for Blinky, who wasn't available, then for the Supremes, who were busy working with Frank Wilson at the time - the Supremes did eventually cut their own version in 1971, but it stayed unreleased until 2006. Knight herself was reportedly a little put off by how strident the lyric felt at first, and only relented after being talked into it. She performed it live on "The Ed Sullivan Show" on February 7, 1971, the very same day it peaked at #9 on the Hot 100 - and became her final #1 on the R&B chart before Motown itself.

The group considered this one a throwaway - Duke Fakir later said "the finished song didn't sound like the Four Tops," and when Berry Gordy played it back for them in his office, they protested and begged him not to release it as a single. This song only exists because Holland-Dozier-Holland were staging a quiet work slowdown - Eddie Holland had grown fed up with pay and conditions at Motown, and with no new Supremes material ready, this leftover track from April 1967 got pulled out and finished in a rush over December and January. It became the group's last hit written by HDH before the trio left Motown entirely to start their own labels, and it also marked the final single to feature Florence Ballard - who married her husband the very day it was released - before Diana Ross began recording solely with session singers the Andantes going forward.

Whatever frustration he felt didn't show up in the final cut: the "second take" became one of the most tender vocal performances of his career, released as the second single off "The Heat Is On" in September 1975, the group's first album ever to hit #1. This was buried as the B-side to "I'll Be in Trouble" back in April 1964, but it still climbed high enough to chart on its own, hitting #2 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100. Eddie Kendricks sang lead and helped write it too, alongside producer Norman Whitfield and Eddie Holland. Neither side of that single became the massive crossover hit Motown wanted, so Whitfield got handed the next single as a test - it also underperformed, and Smokey Robinson stepped back in as producer. His very next song for the group was "My Girl."
