The Path Beneath Us

Walk gently,
my child.

The earth listens
to small feet.

The white buffalo
follows not behind,
but besideโ€”
as all who love you will.

Strength is not in command,
but in care.

Hold the braid,
hold the breath,
hold the line
between past and becoming.

Rememberโ€”
we are not owners of this life,
only its keepers,
for a time.

THE REAL NORTH AMERICANS WERE INDIANS AND THEIR NAMES ARE NAMED AFTER THE PLACE OF THEIR TRIBE NAME

Half of all US states, 25 to be exact, are named after Native Americans.

We will take a look at some of the 25 states and the meaning of their names. They will be listed in alphabetical order.

1. Alabama: Named after the Alabama tribe, or Alibamu, a Muskogean-speaking tribe. Sources are divided between the meanings "clearers of the thicket" or "gatherers of herbs."

2. Alaska: Named after the Aleut word โ€œalaxsxaq,โ€ meaning โ€œthe mainlandโ€

3. Arizona: Named after the O"odham word โ€œal ฤญ แนฃonak,โ€ meaning โ€œlittle springโ€

4. Connecticut: Named after the Mohican word โ€œquonehtacut,โ€ meaning โ€œplace of the long tidal riverโ€

5. Hawaii: Original Hawaiian word meaning โ€œhomelandโ€

6. Illinois: Named after the Illinois word โ€œilliniwek,โ€ meaning โ€œmenโ€

7. Iowa: Named after the Ioway tribe, whose name means โ€œgray snowโ€

8. Kansas: Named after the Kansa tribe, whose name means โ€œpeople of the south windโ€

9. Kentucky: Origins unclear, may have been named after the Iroquoian word โ€œKentake,โ€ meaning โ€œin the meadowโ€

10. Massachusetts: Named after the Algonquin word โ€œMassadchu-es-et,โ€ meaning โ€œbig-hill-little-place.โ€

11. Michigan: From the Chippewa word โ€œMichigama,โ€ meaning โ€œbig lake.โ€

12. Minnesota: Named after the Dakota Indian word โ€œMinisotaโ€ meaning โ€œwhite water.โ€

13. Mississippi: Named after the river that was named by the Choctaw, meaning โ€œbig waterโ€ or โ€œfather of waters.โ€

14. Missouri: Named after the Missouri tribe whose name means โ€œthose who have dug canoes.โ€

She was born when buffalo bones still bleached in the sunโ€”and lived to see the moon landing.

Katie Roubideaux was born in 1890 on the Rosebud Reservation, just fourteen years after the Battle of the Little Bighorn. Her world still echoed with the voices of Sitting Bull, Spotted Tail, and a generation that had known freedom on horseback. She came into a land bruised but not brokenโ€”where grandmothers still made porcupine quillwork, and Lakota lullabies drifted across the plains like prayer.

But the century that followed was not kind.

Katie lived through the boarding school era, when Native children were taken from their families and stripped of their names, their languages, their braids. English was forced. Lakota was forbidden. And yet, somehow, she held onto itโ€”every syllable tucked like medicine in her bones.

She saw the ceremonies outlawedโ€ฆ and then return. She saw her people silencedโ€ฆ and then rise. When Wounded Knee was occupied in 1973, Katie was 83 years old. Imagine her watching from afar, seeing warriors stand again, hearing the old heartbeat thrum through new voices.

By the time she died in 1991, she had lived through two world wars, the invention of the airplane, the Great Depression, the civil rights movement, and the first computers humming in classrooms. But through it all, she remained Lakota. Not as a memoryโ€”but as breath, language, and love passed on.

Katie Roubideaux wasnโ€™t just a witness to historyโ€”she was history. A bridge between buffalo hides and star quilts. Between the fireside songs of her grandparents and the whispered bedtime stories told in Lakota today. Her story reminds us that elders are not just keepers of knowledgeโ€”they are the knowledge. And if we donโ€™t sit down and listen, we lose something irreplaceable.

She may be gone. But in every Lakota child who speaks their first word, in every Sun Dance that continues, in every story retoldโ€”Katie walks beside us still.

In a sun-scorched mesa of Arizona during the 1930s Great Depression, 34-year-old Rosa "Desert" Montoya led her Yaqui-Apache family in thriving despite dust storms and poverty. They grew prickly pear cactus fruit and tepary beans in sandy plots, raised chickens for eggs and feathers, and wove baskets from yucca fibers for trade. Rosa crafted adobe ovens to bake flatbread, while her children collected mesquite pods for flour and herded goats for milk, selling cheese to passing traders. Facing land erosion and job scarcity, their desert wisdom sustained them. Rosa taught her daughter: โ€œThe sun burns, but our roots drink deep.โ€

Buffalo Bird Woman: The Memory Keeper of a Lost World
โ€œI am an old woman now. The buffaloes are gone, and our Indian life with them.โ€
Her name was Waheenee โ€” Buffalo Bird Woman.
Born around 1839 in what is now North Dakota, she lived long enough to watch her entire world disappear โ€” not slowly, but violently and deliberately.
She saw the buffalo herds that once darkened the plains slaughtered to extinction.
She saw her people โ€” the Hidatsa โ€” pushed from their earth lodges into government houses with chimneys that never kept them warm.
She saw her son sent to a boarding school, where his own language became a punishable crime.
But she refused to let her world vanish completely.
In her old age, Buffalo Bird Woman chose to remember โ€” every planting song, every ceremony, every way of life.
She told it all to an anthropologist so her peopleโ€™s story wouldnโ€™t die.
She turned memory into resistance.
Because when everything else is taken โ€” land, home, buffalo, language โ€” to remember is to fight back.
Thanks to her courage, the Hidatsa people today still learn from her words.
The old songs, the earth lodges, the corn gardens โ€” they live again because one woman refused to forget.
Buffalo Bird Woman didnโ€™t just preserve her culture.
She resurrected it.

In the snowy Dakota Territory winter of 1886, two families; one Lakota, one Swedish immigrant; found themselves stranded just miles apart during the worst blizzard in a decade. The Anderssons, new to the plains, had no idea how fast the storm would come. Their oxen froze, their woodpile vanished under six feet of snow, and their baby grew weaker by the hour.

Across the frozen creek, Elk Woman of the Oglala Lakota sensed something was wrong. Her son, Wiyรกka, just sixteen, had seen smoke falter at the Anderssonsโ€™ cabin. She packed pemmican, blankets, and herbs into a sled and set out into the white silence with him.

They reached the settlers just before dark. The Anderssons, near frostbite, wept in relief. Elk Woman didnโ€™t speak English, but she moved with purpose; feeding the baby warmed broth from a horn spoon, wrapping the motherโ€™s hands in rabbit pelts, and stoking a fire with dried buffalo dung sheโ€™d brought from home.

For six days, the Lakota family stayed with the Anderssons, teaching them how to insulate walls with snow, melt water safely, and preserve food. On the seventh day, the sky cleared, and they left without fanfare.

The Anderssons would tell that story for generations, though many neighbors never believed it. But their granddaughter eventually found a beaded sash in a box of heirlooms; marked with the Lakota word wรณwaฤhaล‹tognaka: generosity.
