Now is the time to turn our attention to art, and its ability to soothe and guide us as we traverse through difficult times. An artist can guide our emotion and thought, like Virgil, as we navigate through our circles. When we immerse ourselves in art, it can help us have a dialogue with ourselves-- why do I feel sad? Anxious? Repulsed? And how can I get through it?
This is what I've been thinking, especially in regard to David Lynch and his films. Remembering the scenes in Blue Velvet, feeling the sense of menace and darkness, and the journey back from the seedy underbelly of society. Tonight on KRCB 104.9FM my radio show will feature music from this film, and other pieces that David Lynch loved and created. https://norcalpublicmedia.org/radio-programs/beyond-back
or through the NorCal Public Media app. 8-10PM PST.

I was 12 years old (1974), the most popular group on the radio was the Carpenters. At least that's what we were listening to on the Denver station KIMN. The song "Please Mr. Postman" was at the top of the Billboard chart, and it felt like the song sprung fully formed from the mouth of Karen Carpenter. So it was a surprise to hear the Beatles version and realize that "Mr. Postman" had a prior life. To my kid-self, this was proof that the Beatles was super cool, that they could write a song that was so good that the Carpenters covered it. I even told my mother that the Beatles were great because THEY were the ones who wrote "Please Mr. Postman". Ha! Little did I know, that the song was written by the team at Motown and was the debut single by the Marvelettes in 1961. One of the writers even was a mail delivery person.

This little story is behind the theme of my radio program tonight-- Covers! Songs that were a remake/redo of something that might not be in the public consciousness. For example-- "What's Love Got to do With It" became a huge hit for Tina Turner, after being plucked from an obscure recording by Bucks Fizz. Loads more examples will be played tonight-- tune in 8-10pm PST on 104.9FM (or you can use the Northern California media app to listen, and there is the ole internet krcb.org.)

p.p.s. Songwriter David Porter & the estate of Isaac Hayes, creators of the song "Hold On, I'm Coming" which Donald Trump uses frequently at campaign rallies have both strongly objected to the use of their song.

Joe Jackson, Flock of Seagulls, Adam Ant, U2, The Motels, Paul Weller, The Psychedelic Furs, Elvis Costello, X, Gary Numan! What do all these groups have in common? They are still performing LIVE! 40 years and going strong. Why? And what is it like to go to a concert almost 2 generations removed from their audience?
Tonight on KRCB radio I will be playing music from these artists and more, looking at their careers and their tour schedules. You can tune in 91.1 FM 8:00 PM or look it up online.

Inspired by the Muse. The songs that have sprung from the heart of writer/musicians who felt compelled to sing about their passion. Listen to a gathering of songs that have been directly inspired by real companions, that incorporate the joy & suffering of love. Tonight's broadcast was sparked by the passing last week of Dickey Betts (Allman Brothers) and his ode to his lovely wife Sandy Blue Sky Wabegajig. https://norcalpublicmedia.org/radio/radio

(p.s. looking forward to the release May 3 of this documentary on Anita Pallenberg-- a Muse for all time)

"I've got sunshine, on a cloudy day..."
Let's warm things up a bit! Tonight on Beyond and Back KRCB FM my theme is Jamaican covers of American soul classics. Back in the early '60s the music being broadcast on the clear channel stations from Memphis and New Orleans was the desired sound in Jamaica, just 90 miles away. Jamaicans who worked on the American mainland took jobs there with the idea of bringing back singles and selling them on the streets in Kingston. Sound system parties would feature the latest in American R&B, and the DJs would compete to see who had the best recordings. In a short time, the street DJs, people such as Coxone Dodd and Duke Reid would found their own recording studios to capture the local sound, employing jazz musicians who worked in the uptown resorts and local youth as singers, with the evolution of sound into the ska/rock steady/reggae beat. Great literature abounds with passionate, obsessive, and sometimes unrequited love. There are stories about Notre Dame belfries, Opera House Phantoms, and lovers on the Moors, characters who teeter on the edge of sanity by virtue of their singular passion. How does this fantastical love translate to music? Listen tonight on KRCB where Beyond and Back will be playing music that can be (re) interpreted the lens of an overly possessive and slightly crackpot lover. Songs that you thought were sweet can be reinterpreted as being crazy and slightly stalker-ish. "Every Breath You Take" is just one example of a song that can be rethought. Listen at 8pm PST on https://norcalpublicmedia.org/radio/radio 104.9 fm.

It's Halloween season, and what could be more creepy?
