The system is broken.

Coaches say, 'I love multi-sport kids.' Then they schedule mandatory fall practices that conflict with football. They hold winter workouts that conflict with basketball.

They preach athleticism, then punish kids for developing it elsewhere by threatening their playing time or their spot on the roster.

We need programs that support the whole athlete, not just the baseball player. It's time to let kids be athletes again.

Baseball Coaching advice:

We know this game is hard. Even the best in the world aren’t perfect. They make errors, walk batters, strike out, hit into double plays, make mental mistakes and go through slumps.

In a game of failure, negativity and self doubt, be someone for your players who helps them work through and deal with the bad. It’s easy to point out everything they are doing wrong but we need to always be looking for things to compliment them on. Some days are easier than others but if you pay attention, you can find something.

For individual and team success they need confidence. Without it even the most talented will fall.

Develop a roster of DOGS who play for each other. They aren’t perfect (just like we weren’t as players or now as coaches) but let’s try to give them all the tools they need to compete at their best.
